Re: S1 - Week 12 – Wimbledon – London (GS)

Meligeni fights a lot, but is out of Wimbledon

London (ENG) - It was close. Really close. Fernando Meligeni fighted for more than 4 hours against Feña Gonzalez, was close to clinch the win, but unfortunatelly didn't manage to do it.

First set was surprisingly easy for Fininho. With 2 early breaks, he made 6-2 in 26 minutes and seemed to go for it without doing much effort. Anyway, Feña started to serve unreally good and to make wonderful backhand passing shots. He fastly did 6-1 6-2 in 2nd and 3rd sets respectively. As this match was full of ups and downs, Meligeni got extra forces to close the 4th set in a ridiculous 6-1.

The final set was a real battle. Both players were exhausted, this was pretty clear. No breaks were converted in all set. When 6-5 up, Fininho had the chance to break Gonzo and win it. Anyway, Gonzalez did 2 consecutive aces and saved 2 break points. After that, he restarted playing perfectly like in 2nd and 3rd sets, and Meligeni could do nothing anymore. Gonzalez did 8-6 and felt in the court. Both players huged themselves after this epic match to remain always in Wimbledon history.

"Well, it's a tough loss. Sure, I wasn't expecting to be the champion here, but if I say to you that I'm not disappointed I would be a liar. But I can't complain of myself, Fernando deserved the win. I played my 100%, anyway he played his 101% and won. Now I'll probably lose the number 1 to Gambill or Roddick, but I'm not sad. I'm going to my home country tomorrow morning to start practicing to the Olympics, which is my focus in this season. Seeing the level I'm playing and the title in Paris, I'm pretty excited to bring the Gold Medal to Brasil", said Meligeni in the press room.
