Re: Get your flags, banners and pom poms ready!!! (The Cheering Thread)

I believe they are paid 10k a year in a base salaray just for representing Kazakhstan and then they get prize money on top of that.

Also Russia and Kazakhstan was all the same country more or less before 1991 so its not really like a foregin country. Likhotseva was Kazakh but represented Russia and Olga Puchkova previously represented Belarus and now Russia. Its seems quite common in the former soviet states.

10,000, the chance to play Davis and Fed Cup does seem a nice deal for players like Golubev, Shvedova, Voskoboeva, and Zhenya.

BTW Olympics in 2012 will only allow 4 Russian ATP players MAX regardless of rank. So by defecting you can play at the Olympics despite having a lower rank than some other players. Like with the last Olympics Zvonareva almost missed out because she was the 5th Russian and won a medal only because Maria had to drop out.

Re: Get your flags, banners and pom poms ready!!! (The Cheering Thread)

I can understand for players like Golubev or Shukin ... but Zhenya ?! ... he's been injury free for a year, has improved his ranking a lot... with Marat retiring and Kunytsin and Andreev not doing much for a while now, it doesn't make more sense to me ! Tarpishev included him as 5th men in the DC team before he had his first hernia... i don't see how he wouldn't have made the DC team soon considering his progress and the fact they lost a player !

Plus, he was pretty much considered the new russian heartthrob... filling up for Marat leaving the picture...

Although the facts you stated are true, in his case it honestly seems to be about the money more than anything else ... I wonder how the russian fans are gonna react to that ... for some reason i don't see that one going so smoothly...

Congrats to Evgeny (Zhenya, Evgueni, etc.), Dani!

That is a huge victory over Sam. He is getting more and more consistent since the Fall season. It looks like this will be his year to start becoming a familiar name.

L.R.: I am very disappointed too

Nolby: name change? I'm happy for the singles win and happier that he has been doing so well in doubles

u're late sweety, he got trashed by Mardy 6/1 6/2 in less than an hour in the second round ...

to tell u the truth i'm still a bit disappointed about the whole country switch thing, but now i understand a bit better... so i guess i'll get used to it, although yesterday i was actually considering giving up on him... good thing i have a sports background, i can relate ...
