Re: Evgueni KOROLEV - future of Russian tennis
Stars on the wane and on the rise
The list of players for the qualifying tournament is as illustrious as ever, comprising a mix of former stars, up-and-coming youngsters and of course some local heroes representing France. Austria’s Stefan Koubek, world no. 20 in 2000, Argentina’s Mariano Zabaleta, ranked 21st in 2000, Irakli Labadze from Georgia, who was 42nd in the world in 2004, Spain’s Alex Calatrava, no. 44 in 2001, South Korea’s Hyung Taik Lee, 52nd in the world in 2003 and Paraguay’s Ramon Delgado, who also reached 52nd in 1999… these players have tumbled down the rankings since their respective hey-days, but see the qualifiers as a chance to relive former glories.
On the other hand, youngsters like 17-year-old Argentinean Juan Martin Del Potro, Evgeny Korolev (18) and Teimuraz Gabashvili (21 on 23 May!) from Russia, Italy’s Simone Bolelli (20), Germany’s Andreas Beck (20) or Spain’s Daniel Gimeno-Traver (20), will be looking to make a name for themselves.
Marat: Last question: what do you think of me? Dinara: You are my god! When you play, I love
to see you. When you lose, I am even sadder than when it is me. When you are wounded, I suffer.
When you speak to me, I drink your words. When you come to see me playing, I am with the angels.
