Mark got a WC into the event:

Philippoussis will play in dBI tourney
Former top-10 player a wild card in Challenger

From staff reports
The dBI Tennis Challenger will feature one of the biggest names in its 13-year history this summer, after tournament officials announced Thursday that Mark Philippoussis will compete as a wild card.

Philippoussis, once ranked No. 8 in the world, reached the final of the U.S. Open in 1998 and Wimbledon in 2003. He is currently No. 121 in the ATP rankings.

The dBI Tennis Challenger opens with a qualifying tournament Aug. 5, and the main draw runs Aug. 7-13 at Recreation Park in Binghamton.

"Even though I've had some challenges with injuries affecting my ranking, I had an opportunity to train and get into what I feel is the best condition that I've been in throughout my career," Philippoussis said in a press release Thursday.

"My recent tournament win in Newport (two weeks ago) has made me even more optimistic looking forward," he added. "As I continue to work my way up, the dBI Tennis Challenger is another opportunity to take a positive step forward in the rankings, and I'm appreciative of Laurie (tournament director Laurie Bowen) for giving me this opportunity as I work my way back toward the top 10."

A native of Australia, Philippoussis has won 11 ATP singles titles over his 13-year professional career. He reached the No. 8 ranking in 1999, and he's beaten former top-ranked players Pete Sampras, Jim Courier and Andre Agassi, as well as Roger Federer, who is currently No. 1.

Philippoussis, who has battled knee injuries throughout his career, missed time from October of 2004 to February of 2005 with injuries -- an absence that led to his drop from the No. 9 ranking in 2004 -- and he played in just five tournaments last year. This year, he has posted an 11-8 singles record.

Over the second week in July, Philippoussis entered the International Series event at Newport, R.I., as a wild card in the 32-man field. He dropped just one set over his first four matches before defeating eighth-seeded Justin Gimelstob 6-3, 7-5 in the final.

Tournament officials announced the first 22 singles players in the challenger's 32-player field on Wednesday. A tournament-record nine Americans were included, led by Bobby Reynolds, who reached the third round of the 2005 Australian Open.

Other big names to previously play the event include Lleyton Hewitt, Tim Henman and James Blake

Re: Week 32: Binghampton, Usa

ridiculous giving a WC in a challenger to Flip when it could be given to an American player.

Re: Week 32: Binghampton, Usa

does okun can get SE for Binghamton?

I know that in the past there was a rulle who say that if a player didnt sing up for the event he can not get a SE.

what happend, its thae Okun was late on the sing in to the event.

i think that he could get in from the Alternative if he would sing up...

does he disorve a SE?
