Farewell to Heineken Open Shanghai

Though Shanghai appears on the published ATP 2005 calendar as an international series event, this is not going to happen from 2005 for 3 years to give way to TMC. Having ownship of this event in hand, the tournament is planned to franchise to another city, possibly still in China. A new location can be expected on the calendar soon to replace Shanghai.

This year will also mark the end of using current venue Xian Xia Tennis Center after 5 time ATP and 4 time WTA Tour service. In replacement the Asia's biggest tennis stadium to be is under construction and will be put into use starting TMC 2005.

The tournament director says: "It is sad I know, especially for me as the Tournament Director. The rational behind not staging the event in the same year as the Tennis Masters Cup is two fold.

One is that we need to focus all our staff resources on the TMC. It is one of the most elite events in the world and requires full time attention.

Second, is more financial. Sponsors would must rather invest their sponsorship dollars in the TMC than the Heineken Open. A good example of this is Heineken! They have confirmed all their investment form the Heineken Open into the Tennis Masters Cup.

The good news is that we will re-locate the Heineken Open to another market, possibly still in China. It is also important for the Shanghai tennis fans to realize we have one of the most prestigious tennis events in the world."
