Re: Singles Draw/Standings (as of 11/14/07)

So, how is Roddick already through? If Gonzo wins in straight sets, he'll be 2-1 in matches and 4-3 in sets. Were Roddick to lose in straight sets to Roger, he'd have the same record. Is the head-to-head in this tournament the deciding factor? Does that mean if Gonzalez wins in straight sets, he's in the semis over Roger regardless?

Gold Group

Ferrer needs: to win a set or Nadal to drop a set

Gasquet needs: to win in straight sets or to win and Nadal to drop a set

Nadal needs: to win and Gasquet to lose to Ferrer

If Nadal wins in straight sets and Gasquet wins in three sets: all three players will be tied in sets won. The next tiebreak is games won-lost.

Red Group

Roddick qualifies: cannot finish lower than tied for 2nd with Gonzalez & would win on head-to-head (unless Roddick retires against Federer and Gonzalez wins against Davydenko)

Federer needs: to defeat Roddick or have Gonzalez to lose to Davydenko

Gonzalez needs: to defeat Davydenko and have Federer lose to Roddick

Davydenko needs to: to defeat Gonzalez in straight sets and have Federer retire against Roddick

• Two semifinalists will be determined on Thursday at the Tennis Masters Cup in Shanghai, as the four members of the Gold Group play their third and last wave of matches. Although David Ferrer is the frontrunner, Rafael Nadal and Richard Gasquet are still able to reach the round of four as well. Novak Djokovic is out of contention but can still have a significant effect on the outcome.

• If Nadal beats Djokovic in straight sets, then…
• If Ferrer beats Gasquet, Nadal and Ferrer will qualify.
• If Gasquet beats Ferrer in straight sets, Nadal and Gasquet will qualify.
• If Gasquet beats Ferrer in three sets, it comes down to ratio of games won/lost between the three.

• If Nadal beats Djokovic in three sets, then…
• If Ferrer beats Gasquet, Nadal and Ferrer will qualify.
• If Gasquet beats Ferrer, Ferrer and Gasquet will qualify.

• If Djokovic beats Nadal in straight sets, then…
• Ferrer and Gasquet will qualify.

• If Djokovic beats Nadal in three sets, then…
• If Ferrer beats Gasquet in straight sets, Nadal and Ferrer will qualify.
• If Ferrer beats Gasquet in three sets, Ferrer and Gasquet will qualify.
• If Gasquet beats Ferrer, Ferrer and Gasquet will qualify.

• On Friday, the other two semifinalists will be determined as the four players in the Red Group take the court. Andy Roddick has already qualified, but depending on this third wave of matches, the other semifinal spot is still up for grabs, with Roger Federer and Fernando Gonzalez both having a shot. Nikolay Davydenko, who can’t qualify, can still have an impact on their campaigns, however.

• If Gonzalez beats Davydenko, then…
• Federer needs to beat Roddick to qualify (if he loses, Gonzalez will qualify alongside Roddick).

• If Davydenko beats Gonzalez, then…
• Regardless of what happens in the second match of the day, Federer qualifies alongside Roddick.
