coach

Does he need a new coach? No offense to Gilbert. Maybe he's a great coach, and Mary Carillo can boast about her coaching suggestion. I dunno.

For him to be a better player, he needs someone
who's strict enough to make him make tactical changes against
certain opponents and to plan before events wisely.
AR may be eager to win, but he has a "whatever happens, I'm still satisfied" attitude.
He won't let losses bother him enough
to do new things (after reviewing his matches).

Last year was joyful, but
since July, I've seen him serve faster, which prevents him from attacking the net.

Standing far back, hitting the same pace & running around to hit the forehand can't be enough on carpet, grass and clay.
He doesn't practice footwork (needs to run/slide on his toes more).
Too bad he's not moonballing, junk balling, and underhand serving!

He needs to feel
urgency everytime he plays each event.
It's good to play in Europe/South America even though
he loves Memphis/Houston. It makes him a tougher player to challenge
himself, especially in tough conditions.
This year, some players in small U. S. events are playing better than those in small foreign events, but the U. S. events don't give enough points.

Re: coach

I know firing the coach seems like a great idea when Roddick dares to lose to a amature player such as enqvist but stand back and think about this for one minute.....

Get rid of Gilbert? A guy who took him to #1 and a slam winner in 6 months?

You have to be kidding.

AR's game does not allow him to have a plan B. He has to rely on plan A to get him over the line, it will do it the vast majority of the time.

Thats a roddick issue, not a coach issue.

Surely thats a good thing, he was a little bit more succesful post July wasn't he?

Extremely difficult to do for a man of his size when he has had limited exposure to clay. Sampras never did learn how to move well on clay either.

The top players pace themselves to peak at the slams

Rotterdam is worth the same amount of points as Memphis

Re: coach

It's been less than a year with Gilbert. And he has gone from a contender to No. 1, and still one of the best few players in the world.

there are aspects of his game he can still improve on, but give it time. dumping Gilbert would be nuts right now imo.

I don't even know how to reply... Wyver and Q said it all. It's not often I'm left speechless.

All I can say is...it must be so wonderful to be able to read Andy's mind and know exactly how he's feeling all the time.

I don't think Andy needs to change coach right now.
It is too early to decide because their relationship is less one year and I want to see how to work at clay court season with Gilbert.

Nothin' wrong with brutal honesty.

It'd seem just a tad hasty to fire him now.

Re: coach

It's not like good, compatible coaches are growing on trees. Gilbert was smart enough (and Andre was generous enough so that he could) to wait on the right player. He wouldn't be good at coaching just anyone, and Andy wouldn't match just any coach. We see this again and again.... players struggling to find a coach who is compatible to their style and personality.

Fortunately there are some players who don't need coaches.

I completely agree. Look how far Andy has come with Gilbert on his side. I only expect him to get better in the future. A loss here and there is actually helpful sometimes. But a loss at Slam...that's bullshit Andy. I hope to never see that again, especially to Marat the goon.

lol, well come on Mr.Man the roles of God and Jesus are already taken up, there's no more room for Andy, so he's gotta lose at the grand Slams

well since we are all a religious cult of Andy fans, Moses as our leader seems to fit quite nicely, no?
