<<<RATE ANDY RODDICK's SKILLS>>>

I made this up for FEDEX but hey, why let it go to waste. Rate Andy's skills as compared to everyone else in the game. Here are my ratings.

RealityRyan's player breakdown for Andy

(stars are out of 6)

Andy Roddick:

Forehand:* * * * *
I give Andy five stars on his forehand. He has the ability to end a point from anywhere on the court with it. The pace, and placement on his forehand is currently unmatched....

Backand:* * *
A definite weak point for Roddick but, he has learned to work around it and make it more consistent. Generally he will run around it if given the chance.

Serve:* * * * * *
The fastest serve in Tennis...when Roddick is hot...he won't be broken...nuff said..

Movement and Mobility:* * *
Well he's no Michael Chang but he moves pretty quickly when has too.

Focus/Mental Ability:* * * *
Certainly lacking in the Early part of Roddick's Career but, now he is able finish and make comebacks from behind without nerves getting to him.

Net Skills:* *
Not very Sampras like...but he can rush the net when he has too and has been able to mix it up as of recent times.

Re: <<<RATE ANDY RODDICK's SKILLS>>>

Erm......ok!

Forehand: ****
4 instead of 5 only because the sloppy wristy-ness. I hope he doesn't get a chronic injury b/c of it. Otherwise his forehand is incredible (see: Match point against him last year's AO QF)

Backhand: ***
What you said.... and it's improving

Serve: *****
Because there's always room for improvement

Movement: **
I think this is where he has the most to work on. If he had to be so scrappy when he was little, I don't know why he's so choppy now but it sounds like he knows this is really important to improve, so that is a good sign.

Focus/Mental: *** (it was about ***** last summer and I'd like to see it get back there)
He's getting better but as we saw last night, he's still spotty and still gets line calls and stuff get to him too much.

Net Skills: **3/4
He's getting so much better, and I love that he's now comfortable enough serve-volleying as a risk when he's down break point, to me that shows massive improvement.

And you forgot one...

Return: **
As he said as of late, he knows this is huge. His returning is pretty poor now. he pops a lot of returns on easy second-serves out and if he could get on the ball and be agressive and get stuff like that in, he'd break a lot more. And since he's hard to break, if he can play better return games he'll be lethal.

yes.. I did forget Return

Return: * * *
Not as bad as some think but not that good. He needs to work on moving up closer to the baseline. Hitting shots from like 10 miles behind the baseline really limits your options and is a great way of taking your self out of a point. Still he comes through with a big return(s) when he has to. Watch the Lbjucic match from US open last year.

Re: <<<RATE ANDY RODDICK's SKILLS>>>

yea.... that sounded like a quick fix from everything everyone said. It won't work on the longterm so I hope they've worked on it. Guess we'll see in a couple days where he stands. Haven't gotten any word about that in particular from Kooyong or anything.

serve:*****
it can improve, but face it, its the best serve out there, so it deserves a 5 on 5.

forehand:****1/2
he can still learn how to hit them better, hit them flatter, etc.

backhand:***
it turned into a very steady shot that really holds up during his backhand passing shots. needs to add more sting to it

movement:***1/2
for a guy that big and weighing that heavy, he's a very good mover, but he can improve on it

focus:***3/4
like bunk said, summer hardcourts 2003 was more of a 4-5, but it's dipped. the fact that he always fights out there and never gives up is a positive

net skills:***
used to be like a 1, big max 2. he can now hit very nice volleys(see def Malisse 4th round US Open 2003) can still get better, but his volleys are better than quite a few players

return:***
he has to learn how to return on the baseline more, but it will take him some time. he's now able to really crunch at least 1 return every match i've seen so far with Gilbert as his coach, so its getting better

Well, I was wondering the same about you, Bunk. What gave Andy 1/4 less than 4 on the netgame.

Re: <<<RATE ANDY RODDICK's SKILLS>>>

because he's not good enough for 4 stars yet but I think he's better than 3.... maybe 3 1/2 was more appropriate

Andy's net game is well, not to good. I think anything over 2 stars starts to make it average or maybe a little bit of a strength and it's not. It's a weak point. So two stars...

Re: <<<RATE ANDY RODDICK's SKILLS>>>

He's gotten a lot better. The fact that he will S-V down break point shows me that he's a lot more confident in his volleying than he used to be. And confidence seems to breed success for him.... so yeah. it's not as much a liability as it was.

actually my bad, gave him to high of a rating. changed it from 3 1/4 to a solid 3. his return game is just about average, if he steps closer a few more times, then he'll get another 1/2 stars. this will always be andy's weakness, but because he has a 5 serve, it puts pressure on his opponents when serving, so they can serve stupidly and Andy can take advantage of it

Re: <<<RATE ANDY RODDICK's SKILLS>>>

...hasn't really taken advantage of the off-season to train.
Forehand: ****

Backhand: ** passive

Serve: **** needs good placement,
ineffective when he's exhausted, double faults more 'cuz he's not
slowing it down, flattening out the trajectory,
has to take time before serve,

Movement: ** bad court positioning, little improvement, poor footwork-not working hard

Focus: *1/2
constantly shows embarrassment-either too little or too much aggression vs. tougher opponents,

opponent didn't hit a great shot,
he made an unforced error, but he acted like his opponent did somethiing amazing,

premature celebrations/applauds opponents
(self-humiliation's tiring), loses concentration,

has no strategy when he's in a slump, unprepared

stop denying that he's struggling

Net Skills: * No practice...nice

Return: **

Training: *
