I don't think this is going to happen. Today's loss wasn't the first one against one of the young Americans. Last year he lost against Ginepri in Indianapolis. He owned him (0-6 H2H), even in the juniors. It was a bad loss for Andy (he had mps and blew them, but it didn't seem to bother him). I don't know what Andy needs to finally realize what's happening. I thought his horrible performance at the US Open was a wake-up call for him. I thought his loss at the Australian Open was it, but nothing has changed. Honestly, seeing how bad in form he is, I don't think he'll reach the final at Wimbledon. Especially not if he has a draw full of grasscourt specialists (e.g. Bracciali, Hewitt, Ancic, Mirnyi, Federer, Henman, Karlovic etc.). In fact, it wouldn't surprise me if he loses (for the first time) to Robredo during the US summer hardcourt season.

I agree, the only difference is that James is almost surely going to actually pass andy in the rankings after wimby. And THAT might do something. i mean at davis cup when he beat gonzo he made a joke about being the closer something like "until james passes me in the rankings in a couple weeks" - he was kidding obviously but that has got to kill him. So, in a lot of senses I don't think the loss to Robby was as bad, because also at the time it was not long after Wimby, Andy hadn't played well that whole tourney, and was just sort of in an overall pissy mood that week, but this today was different in a lot of ways and circumstances and that's why i think it's worse. but yeah it'll just be one more kick in the ass for him, whether this will be the one that actually does something, I guess we will have to wait and see.

of course if he just really believes he played okay today, and doesn't see the problems, then no kicks in the ass will make a difference.

Good grief, that is a depressing thought. Don't jinx. He can only get better.

Wow I didn't think Andy paid that much attention to the rankings and how close James is to passing him. Guess it really is on his mind! No matter how happy he is for his buddy he must feel like shit deep down inside. At least I hope that's how he feels. I guess I'm a bit more lenient on Andy because I know this kind of stuff can really pile up on ya and it's really difficult to reverse the trend when you're stuck in a metaphysical rut. I've been in matches where I try so hard to turn things around but it just keep slipping away each time, like watching a movie again and again, and there's pretty much nothing you can do about it. I can only imagine how much harder it is for Andy on the world stage. Mental giant he is not!! I know he is trying his best (ok maybe not in the match) and we can see that when he's asking Jimmy for help.

He is foolish to think he can hide from his fans (maybe except le boppahs ) his drop in form and confidence with his smokescreen interviews though.

Re: The "when I said 'healthy' I meant mental health too" Queens thread

I'm sure he does feel like shit deep inside - whether James passes him or not. I'm sure we all know what it's like to try at something and for it just to keep not going your way. And then when Andy was finally playing some good ball he got hurt, and then this thing and that thing, etc.

naw, he is trying his best. there is something that he simply just can't completely work through. he has made progress in the last few months but he has still lost matches he should have won (Haas in Houston, today, etc). The things that bother me about today are that i didn't see any gameplan. He just looked lost and that turned into a lack of focus at the big stages. It's not like he was like "Ok I am gonna take there first strike in the rally to not let James do it" or "ok I'm gonna get to net as much as I can" or whatever it may have been. There just seemed to be no strategy. And considering that James's game is about as open a book as one can have, I don't understand this.

Another thing was his body language. He revealed early on that he was gonna be negative an cranky. And a guy like James who knows him as well as he does and stuff is going to take advantage of that, and he did. He needs to learn how to fake it, even if he's not feeling it inside, he's gotta keep an even keel outside. He must suck at live poker, no wonder he plays it online so much

And the last thing is the stuff he said in the interview. But we've been over it already no need to do so again. I hope they're smokescreen. I don't care as much what he says or what John writes on his site, I care what they are thinking and talking about amongst themselves and I just hope that they're not really thinking his form is fine and that he played fine today.

Re: The "when I said 'healthy' I meant mental health too" Queens thread

I just can't believe we're right back where we have been a number of times. 1st round US Open, Austrailian Open, San Jose, Indian Wells, Houston, everywhere he's went this year has ended with the same discussion over and over again, wtf is Andy Roddick? The one i'm seeing isn't the one i love. The Andy Roddick i love is the one that beat Gonzo...watching that match i realised again why i still went for the guy and so i am genuinely upset about this match.

It just sucks that when we think he's taken a step forward he takes 20 steps back again to leave us scratching our heads thinking WTF is going on. I don't fault him for making it seem like everythings ok to the media, i think we all know by now that the media are berating him enough without him adding fuel to the fire...and thats what it would be.

I just don't know what to expect from Wimbledon now...i ran through a few old tapes yesterday from last years Wimbledon shuddering watching Bracciali all but destroy Andy that night, Andy struggling against CORIA on grass...last year he could rely on his serve to get himself out of those messes..but 'The Serve' can't help him out as much anymore and that scares the hell outta me

It should be posted in the tourney site tomorrow. It's 12.45am and doubt the site will have any further udpates today.

So I'm not the only one finding James ascendancy annoying

Re: The "when I said 'healthy' I meant mental health too" Queens thread

James can play Davis Cup more often than Andy..
Andy's punishing himself too much already.
Being 6 foot 3 and 197 pounds is a disadvantage..

No one cares if Andy has 5 Davis Cup titles and 0 Grand Slams.

His has no champion tactics.

He needs to be in TIP TOP PHYSICAL SHAPE.....
and regain DEXTERITY AND VARIETY ON ALL SHOTS.

Years of improvement ON BACKHANDS, VOLLEY + SERVE
ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN PLAYING FOR PAT MCENROE.

Hitting with his brother and Paul Goldstein obviously did nothing for him.

HE learned the dropshot, but HE STOPPED WORKING ON IT.
His FOREHAND died because HE IS TOO BUSY FOOLING AROUND.

That failure of a serve needs to CHANGE NOW.
It can change. It changed for the worse every year, so now is the time
to reverse this trend.
Predictable, SELF-INVENTED SERVE motion.
Everyone was awed by its raw speed in 2003.
It's a clumsy, easily blockable shot that doesn't belong
to a CHAMPION.
He needs to be FASTER.
So he can MOVE FORWARD WHEN HE SERVES.
All he does are throw the ball and retreat behind the baseline.

wow I just saw what he said in the On the Rod that ellen updated that had been done after Andy's match last night..... wow. "I'm excited" "it's a big match for both of us" "he's gunning for the #1 American spot and I'm not sure I want to give that up yet"
