Brad writes from Melbourne

1.12.2004 - We're in Melbourne now practicing. Last week, Andy lost in the 2nd Rd to Bjorkman. Weather was the big equalizer, it was really windy, but Bjorkman played tremendous so credit to him. The organizers did a great job and it was truly like an oasis in the dessert.

We've had two really good practices here and putting last week behind us, weather has been suprisingly cool, around high 60's. This week Andy will have three guaranteed matches at the Commonwealth Bank International in Kooyong. Although not a official ATP event, it features a top-tier field in Agassi, Dent, Nalbandian, Grosjean, Federer, El Aynaoui, and Ginepri. Tommy Haas may be in the field if Nalbandian's wrist forces him out. Watched Andre practice yesterday, and for a guy at 33 going on 34, he still looks incredible. Conditions here should be much closer to what Andy will see next week as compared to Qatar. This is Andy's first time here, but it will be a great opportunity to play himself into feeling good about his game before next week.

Big controversy in the media down here is the stories about Rusedski and McEnroe. It's really unfortunate that this is making big headlines for tennis. Right now is a really exciting time for men's tennis and there's such a great group of young players headlining the tour now with Andy, Roger, Juan Carlos, Nalbandian...and Safin and Hewitt look like they're back to playing well. Hopefully the media can get back to covering the positive stories.

Congrats to Donald Young Jr. on doing my "Future Stars" pick proud. He won the 16s Orange Bowl International Championships in late December. I've got two new Future Stars, Alex Kuznetsov and Maria Kirilenko, that i'll post info on soon.

This will be Andy's first time as a #1 seed at a Slam. It's a great accomplishment and reward for his hard work. Things are going well and we're looking to have a great Open.

Scraps:
Unbelievable comeback on 4th and 26 by the Eagles (where was the review on that spot?). I'm looking for New England and Philly to win this weekend. Take the AFC in the Super Bowl.

Bunk, I'm not a football fan either but I DID watch the Pats this weekend (and they WON again! How funny was it seeing everyone completely bundled up in their hats and blankets? I think it like 5 degrees out that night! ) I think I may be watching more football because of the Pats' successful run so far. I'd love to see them win the Super Bowl again.

Big controversy in the media down here is the stories about Rusedski and McEnroe.

I wonder what prompted McEnroe to suddenly come out and say he was on steroids all those years ago? I can't imagine he was nervous about Rusedski's threats (that other top players also tested positive).

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

The commercials themselves would be interesting to see.

Nice to read something from Brad.

Like father, like son
