APAT Part Deux

I'm rewatching 5th set of the AO QF....

So good, so good. How did Andy get rebroken serving for the match at 11-all? He could have saved himself a lot of energy But he was very cute covering his mouth before swearing. I wonder why he had the self-censor on that night lol

Don't mind me

Re: APAT Part Deux

Younes played a very good game when he broke back. And Andy got a little tight up at the net!

If I remember correctly, there was only one break point, and Younes took advantage of it.

But that's part of what made that last set so tremendously exciting. NO WAY did anyone think that Younes was going to break back after so many games with both players holding serve!

HISTORIC match. I think it will make future top ten lists of greatest matches.

Re: APAT Part Deux

You know there are some people who hold that thing about him handing the ball boy the racket as Younes was about to serve against Andy, and say that it broke Younes concentration and led to him being broken. They say it was gamemanship from Andy.

yeah, that occurred to me at the time, and I have heard it from a few people.

It might be true that it broke Younes' concentration. he certainly wasn't as on top of things in that next game.

But I am POSITIVE that it wasn't an intentional gamesmanship ploy from Roddick. I think it was a spontaneous action in an extraordinary situation, and Younes seemed to go along with it good-naturedly.

Re: APAT Part Deux

I don't think it was either. I don't know if he would do it again though. Younes didn't seem to think it was intentional either. He also said that he was so very tired, he was bound to be broken. He seems to have only good feelings for Andy.

Re: APAT Part Deux

yes, Younes seems to feel positively about that match! Funny, I think it is that match which has made him most famous, even though he lost! (similarly, I recently read about McEnroe saying his 1980 loss to Borg at Wimby was his most remembered match and the one in which he earned the most respect from the public).

Re: APAT Part Deux

there is another aspect of the ball boy incident which should be considered. sure, Roddick handed the racket to the ball boy, but it might have been the BALL BOY'S decision to actually go out there and face El Aynaoui. maybe that spanking by Roddick was because of THAT, lol!

Re: APAT Part Deux

Really?

The tennis will seem so ancient. When I see clips, it looks almost as if they are playing with badminton rackets. The rackets are so small. Tennis has changed so much.

Another contrast in that match is that Borg strung his rackets as tight as they could go. Tighter than anyone on the tour. His coach said sometimes you could hear the strings breaking in the bag at night. Mac on the other hand had a racket like a trampoline. He strung it at about 40lb.

Re: APAT Part Deux

Wow.... people will look for ANYTHING to slight Andy, won't they?? Younes was 31 and exhausted and really, it was sort of only a matter of time before Andy would break him.

*goes back to wonderful world of thinking the ballboys moment is one of the best she's ever seen on a tennis court*
