I think I might be getting a new laptop when I go home this summer (if I can afford it ) so I wanted your advice. What brands would you/wouldn't you recommend? (bearing in my I have a limited budget) or do you have any advice in general about what to look for? because my current laptop is a Toshiba and I've had a lot of problems with it, the latest being that the fan has broken so it gets ridiculously hot, ridiculously quickly and that is slowing the computer down, but it had already been running slowly for quite a while before so it's pretty bad now! and I also have a friend who has had problems with a Toshiba laptop so I'm not going to buy one ever again!

Re: The Finger Exercise Thread :)

anything but dell!!! I've heard good things about Fujitsu and I've had good luck with my IBM/Lenovo but they are expensive. I know a lot of people who have Sonys - some have had a lot of trouble, some have had decent luck. I know several people who like their Toshibas though, so who knows

Well, i'd probably get a mac actually, and my next one very well might be one in a couple years. But they're expensive.

I'd check out Fujitsu, last I checked they're quite affordable but I haven't done laptop research in like 2 years so i dunno if their quality/customer service is any good. I know some people like HP and some don't. Same for Gateway, if you have those there.

Whatever you get, i'd really think about buying an extra service package so you can keep it longer without having to worry about what might happen if a major part dies. My 3-year warranty on mine was like, $150 for three years of all parts AND at-home service. Invaluable.

Re: The Finger Exercise Thread :)

I guess it all really depends on the computer rather than the brand. And maybe I was just unlucky with mine or I should have done more research, who knows. I would love to get a Mac but I don't think it's possible in my current money situation. Maybe if I can find a job this summer. What I really wanted to do was keep this one until I finish uni and then buy a better one, but I don't think it'll last that long. I could buy a new fan but I just think it's going to die on me sooner or later!

can I ask why not Dell? I know a few people with Dell laptops and they never seem to have any problems and they still work well (and quickly!) after a couple of years.

I think you're right, the model matters more than the computer. I just had really terrible luck with my Dell and have several friends who did also. I think you should browse around and pick out some models you are interested in that fit with your budget and research the heck out of them online. Could you get your current one fixed to last you til the end of school?

JO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you're alive!!!!!!!!!!!

fujitsu's a good brand so I'll go with fujitsu. my current one is a 5 year old toshiba. my new one's a sony. but sony battery life is disappointingly short, so if you're the kind that lugs your laptop EVERYWHERE, you might want to give sony a miss, although they have a new range now that's cheaper than the regular sonys but with pretty good specs as well.

Re: The Finger Exercise Thread :)

Laptop-talk! Me likey

I'm currently on a Toshiba and I totally regretted getting it The fan is somewhat broken, so it sounds like it's "taking off" every now and then - annoying. It works really slow now, and seems to always be always running out of memory It's also not as handy if you carry it around a lot. I'm not even sure why I bought it in the first place, to be honest So, I'm with you, Jo. Never again

Fujitsu is good - I haven't heard anything bad about it either. It's still quite pricey though, isn't it? But if it works fine for an extended period of time, I would totally get it.

I know a lot of people are using Dell, and I haven't heard anything bad about it so far. It's cheaper and works well - I like the specs as well - it almost seems like it's too good to be true, at times, with the kind of specs they're offering for that amount of money. And surprisingly, it does work well longer than I would've anticipated. But then, people I know who uses Dell doesn't really do 'heavy computing' work on their machine, like I do. So perhaps it's one of my personal thing as well.

HP/Compaq - I have mix experience with it. It's little things that comes up every now and then, but I guess it depends on luck as well. A few of my cousins use HP laptops and have never had any problem with their machines...

Jo, I think it's worth considering what you're using it for as well. If it's just for regular stuff (work processing, internet surfing), I'm guessing Dell would be a pretty good option to go for...

Re: The Finger Exercise Thread :)

The problems I had with my dell were not with the insides, the computer still even runs fine, but the outside basically started falling apart. Luckily I had a 3-year warranty so I got it fixed when I got my new one and gave it to my mom, but I just think they're not built to be moved around a lot and stuff, that's why I went with a lenovo which is made with metal and stuff. If you get a dell I would just check the durability ratings of the particular model you choose, and I think Renee is spot on about really getting a model that is right for what you want to use it for.

Re: The Finger Exercise Thread :)

Laptops!! I love my current HP laptops. I have had one over two years and one almost a year and the only problem I've had is that one of the keyboard keys has broken. The oldest one has a fan that is slowly getting louder but mostly only when I try to run Photoshop and iTunes at the same time.

Before the HP I had a Sony VAIO which had fan and overheating problems and was just incredibly slow. I know several other people who have had problems with their VAIOs too. :/
