Re: The Finger Exercise Thread :)

Okay! Thanks It told me "Bonjour, comment etes-vous?" And the first e in etes has the little ^ above it - I have no idea what that's called I wasn't sure if that works for the plural version too, because I'm writing a letter to a family.

Thanks so much!

Re: The Finger Exercise Thread :)

the proper conjugation of that verb is Vous etes (with the little ^ above the first e) but no, not to ask how someone is - at least not to my knowledge there are some francophones around here but they'd be sleeping right now probably. But I'm pretty sure that's right

here, i checked it at wordreference: http://www.wordreference.com/enfr/how+are+you

that's my favorite site for translating single words and common phrases

Great! I know that I can never trust the translating sites at all, especially with phrases. My knowledge of French is nil though, unfortunately. Thank you so much

Re: The Finger Exercise Thread :)

Yeah the translating sites really suck but I like wordreference, I think it's usually right since it's a more standard single-word dictionary

You're welcome!

Yeah, translating sites are terrible usually. my brother sent me a text message in french and used a translating site and the result was hilarious!

"êtes" is the conjugation of the verb "être" (to be), but it's not correct to use it to say "how are you going?"
Deb is right, the verb "aller" is used in this instance, as in "Comment allez-vous". Just to reinforce what you already know as correct.
