It told me "Bonjour, comment etes-vous?" And the first e in etes has the little ^ above it - I have no idea what that's called
I wasn't sure if that works for the plural version too, because I'm writing a letter to a family.

"êtes" is the conjugation of the verb "être" (to be), but it's not correct to use it to say "how are you going?"
Deb is right, the verb "aller" is used in this instance, as in "Comment allez-vous".
Just to reinforce what you already know as correct.
