Lightbulb The "Andy says, 'I have no excuses this year if I don't do well.'" RG thread

Thought it was good to start this now, help Andy pick up some steam to have a decent clay season, and maybe have a thread for the whole season to try to vicariously help Andy pick up some momentum

Here's his schedule as of now

4/7 - exhibition against Mardy in Houston at the River Oaks event
4/18 - USMCC in Houston (oh boy I'm hoping he stays in houston that whole time and works on the red clay there but that might be overly-wishful thinking on my part )
5/2 - Rome (please, let's hope lightning doesn't strike twice!)
5/9 - Hamburg - slowest of the clay tournies but Andy proved he CAN play on slow clay in DC
5/23 - RG - Can Andy win 2 matches here? And let's lay off the supreme pizzas the night before our first round match, mmmmkay?

C'mon Andy.... Clay is FUN!

Lol, I used to love modelling clay like that.

Enjoy the clay season Andy . Also, remember I'm not at RG until the Sat/Sun, so you must win at least twice. Please take the clay seriously for a change.

Q. You must have so many different emotions going through your head. Was it like a rollercoaster for you?
STANISLAS WAWRINKA: Yeah, yeah, it's quite crazy..I never expect to win a Grand Slam.
I never dream about that because for me, I was not good enough to beat those guy.

Maybe the sky will fall?

Now he'll win just for the purpose of you being able to see him.

Mardy Fish for president.

Clay kicks so much ASS. If Andy decides not to show up, I'll be sure to take over his duties.

Get decent results.

This is a quote from Andy, RG 2001, just after having to retire when playing against Hewitt:

"I wanted to make someone play well to beat me."

Don't forget Andy, you said that!

Re: The "C'mon Andy, playing on clay is FUN!" clay season thread!

This is what Andy said last year after he lost in Rome.... cmon Andy get over the hump, prove you can do it

"It's weird because usually I feel really good on clay. It's just when I have an off-day, I feel really bad. Obviously, it's not my first surface, but, you know, I've had good results. I've won four tournaments on it; semi, like you said, here at the Masters Series event. My first year on Tour I probably played better on clay than I did on hard. I think it's just a matter of getting matches under my belt on clay. It's getting over that first hump."

Even Sampras managed to get to the semifinal at Roland Garros.
Stefan Edberg got to the final.
Hey, didn't Boris Becker (who never ever won a clay court tournament) get to
the semifinal?

Twice. 1989 and 1991 (incidentally, lost in 1st round in 1990 in between )

But he skipped it a lot and lost early most of the other times.

But, your point is well-taken

Becker got to the RG semis three times.

McEnroe is another player with a fast-court game who made the finals, and almost won. ( )

Roddick may not be the best at point construction, but at his best, he does have an instinct to fight for every ball and grind out matches. From what I understand, when he was younger and didn't have the big serve he was used to having to work hard to win points. So I hope that he will have greater success on clay this year. No, he's no Coria/Ferrero, but he can do much better than he has recently.

I believe in luck. How else can you explain the success of those you don't like? ---Jean Cocteau
