Re: Spring Hardcourt Season

Ugh... well, this was better then I expected before the tournament anyway... but after those couple of wins I was really hoping that he can reach semi-final. I read that he wasted a couple of match points as well.

At least he was close to winning, and this is the positive thing. Anderson is a decent player, and this is not a bad loss, although it is bad that he lost after being so close to winning.

And I agree about the serve. It certainly doesn't look big and intimidating anymore. It lacks speed and good placement. Andy used to be a big server, but now he is just a good server, and it doesn't help to hold his service games. I also think that he has to concentrate on working on his serve, he needs it as a real weapon, and at the moment it is not such a weapon as it used to be.

Oh, well... on to the next tournament then! At least, it looks more hopeful to me than after San Jose and Memphis

Well, is it good or bad that Andy probably played the best match he's played in like over a year in a match that doesn't count

Re: Spring Hardcourt Season

At least he can use some confidence. He really needs good draw in IW, but I don't know how he is going to get it with this ranking.

Re: Spring Hardcourt Season

I went to the exo at the last minute last night and I'm glad I went, it was better than I was expecting. Andy the showman was very entertaining (loved the Nadal impersonation, he always won the point when he played like Rafa ). It was a huge crowd but seats were still available (I bought my tickets at the window during the Masha-Wozzy match). Small relief to see Andy wearing his ankle braces again. No, the win doesn't count but who knows maybe it was the tonic he needed to rehab his confidence and find his game again. I will be optimistic for him this spring.

*edit*

Excellent, somebody uploaded the video already

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."

I haven't seen the highlights yet. Did he actually play "correctly"?

Yes I would say so for the most part. He ripped some big returns, had some good forehands, didn't slice TOOOOOO much... it was pretty decent.

His IW draw is pretty funny so that will be a big test

That's pretty cool...it's supposed to reair on Monday and I have it set to record.

I don't think anyone is expecting too much but I agree with Larry that Andy usually starts the year very hot...but I would rather he sorta peak around Wimbledon. The tennis year is so long and basically it's all about the slams anyways so if he's going to want win one of those it's always going to be about how he's playing and not about his ranking...I will say however, a crappy ranking will definitely make things much, much harder.

Re: Spring Hardcourt Season

This is painful. Especially his serve, and his second serve return

Re: Spring Hardcourt Season

Well, something bizarre happened when Kubot broke to serve for the match and Andy's switch went on and he played so much better for the most part One of his better wins in a while I guess. don't remember the last time he really came back from the brink and won.

Re: Spring Hardcourt Season

Far from being pretty, but a hell of gutsy win. I had lost all hopes, when Andy was 4:6, 4:5* down. That was one brilliant return game. Finally. Broke Kubot to love, although Lukasz did clown it up a little by himself as well.

So, he has earned an opportunity to play (most likely) Berdych. Well, has to serve and return much better than this to give himself a chance. This rather slow IW court should be a factor in his favor during baseline exchanges, but overall I am not having my hopes up for the next match.

Thanks God he won. Doesn't even matter, how it happened, ugly or not, just the fact that he won a match makes me happy

Re: Spring Hardcourt Season

Finally he showed that he gives a shit on court. I thought he was headed for another routine straight set loss. I've been use to so many losses these last 2 years but at least he never went down easy. So many losses recently where it feels he went down without a fight.

It kills me to think of how great that IW/Miami run in 2010 was. That match with Nadal was AMAZING and was in such impecable form. It's crazy and heartbreaking to realize he literally hasn't been anywhere close to the same since. It's been 2 years of mediocre to meh results.
