Roddick, Haas Among Tennis Stars to Serve Up Tsunami Relief in Houston
ATP stars Andy Roddick and Tommy Haas helped Jim Courier and others raise more than $500,000 for the Bush-Clinton Tsunami Relief Fund in a special exhibition in Houston, Texas on Monday night.
Courier and his InsideOut Sports & Entertainment Group teamed up with two-time Tennis Masters Cup Houston tournament promoter Jim McIngvale to assemble a cast of current and former tennis greats along with celebrities for the fundraiser. Others participating included John McEnroe, Chris Evert, Anna Kournikova, TV celebrity Dr. Phil, NBA legend Clyde Drexler and former U.S. President George Bush.
The ATP assisted in the staging of the event through its International News Feed team, providing footage of the fundraiser throughout the world. Additionally, ATPtennis.com is featuring video highlights of the event. The ATP’s official magazine, DEUCE, also sent a writer and photographer to cover the event for its next issue, which will be on sale in late March.
“We’re all proud of the commitment toward tsunami relief efforts that the tennis community, particularly tennis players such as Andy Roddick and Tommy Haas, has demonstrated following the crisis in Southern Asia,” said ATP CEO Mark Miles. “The latest effort by all involved with Monday’s event is another shining example. I particularly applaud the efforts of Jim Courier and Jim McIngvale for organizing it, and their staffs for their exhaustive efforts over the past few weeks to make it happen.”
More than 8,000 fans attended the event. Players entertained fans with a mix of great tennis and light-hearted banter. At one point during the pro doubles, Roddick asked Kournikova: “Are you flirting with me?” The glamorous Russian, whose off-court partner is Enrique Iglesias, shot back: “That will never happen.” Not to be outdone, Roddick answered: “Is it because I can’t sing and dance?”
Items auctioned during the event included racquets donated by Agassi, McEnroe, Roddick and Kournikova; signed Roger Federer programs, t-shirt and original painting from the 2003 Tennis Masters Cup; a tennis date with Steffi Graf; and a trip to Acapulco to attend the Abierto Mexicano de Tenis (provided by Aeromexico).
