OMG. this is going to be a disaster.

It seems random that Mardy wasn't picked for the singles but for the doubles?! although I guess Sam did well on clay this year. let's just pray for a miracle!

Re: The "Slip-Sliding to Spain to Try Their Best" 2008 Davis Cup Thread!!

My guess is that Mardy was the first choice for singles, but he didn't want to play b/c of his wedding. To go away for over a week right before your wedding would be quite difficult I'm sure. So they got Sam. And then when Bob decides he can't play, I can only imagine that PMac called Mardy up and just begged him to help out for the doubles. Mardy in doubles would be way preferable than Sam anyway. They'd definitely both lose singles but putting Mardy in at least still gives us a small chance So my guess is that even if Mardy had agreed to play when James pulled out, once Bob pulled out, they would've asked Sam anyway, and I'd bet they'd still put Sam out in singles and Mardy in doubles.....

yeah, I guess Mardy only agreed because he had no choice! I'm not used to these team issues, it's be so nice having a reliable team for the last few years!

yeah though I guess if it has to hurt us, better it be a tie we were almost certainly gonna lose anyway than a tie we should win and would have trouble with because of this

I don't care what Mardy does, I now get to stalk him at DC. This is going to make me so overexcited and also regret not staying in the player's hotel (although, $500 for one night is fucking insane).

It's better this happens now (where there was like a .0000001% chance of winning) than in February where they need to win their first round.

aw jo, your optimism is so cute

I also think if this were a home tie that we were "supposed" to win and it were on HC or something, James would have played.

I wanted to post that exact thing when it was announced about him but I was scared I'd get yelled at.

Re: The "Slip-Sliding to Spain to Try Their Best" 2008 Davis Cup Thread!!

well the traveling plus changing surface are probably the two hardest parts of going to spain, so if you take those two factors away and it's not nearly as exhausting. I wasn't knocking James for not going b/c i'd rather him back out than perform like a putz. But I think it's true

no, it's stupid!

I think so too. I also think if they hadn't won last year he might have gone as well but maybe I'm being too cynical. Not that I'm trying to bash James for not going, if he doesn't think he can perform then I agree with his decision but the desperation to win it has gone now so maybe he doesn't feel as bad for pulling out and letting one of the younger guys have a go as he would've if they hadn't won yet.

The reality is that they were unlikely to win regardless of the team make-up. However, if I were P Mac, I might have considered Ginepri over Fish since Ginepri had a stronger French.

It's not stupid! it's admirable! As for the rest, you're probably right.

Sure of course. on the other hand though, Fish is clearly the more confident player right now - Ginepri barely won a match all summer. And he's far and away a better doubles player. And he's got the "away tie on clay against spain" experience. And for doubles, surface is less important. there's no comparison between fish and almost any of the other American players in terms of doubles.
