thanks guys! It was a nice ceremony. The keynote speaker was Al Gonzalez - he is Counsel to the White House and a Rice alum.... his speech was wonderful. He told this story about how when he was like 10 or 11 he sold drinks at Rice football games and it was his dream to go to school here - his family was very poor and his father built a house for 10 kids with his own hands. But he knew he couldn't afford college so he went into the Armed Forces and was stationed in Alaska where he decided he wanted to be in the Air Force academy. He actually got in and was there like 2 years but he decided he didn't like science and engineering and instead wanted to go into law/politics, and he didn't want to see his dream of going to Rice go by the wayside. so he applied to be a transfer and figured if he got in then it was meant to be and if not, he would stay at the Air Force Academy and finish that and become a pilot. So.... he got in and graduated 25 years ago and now he's the president's lawyer. It was such a beautiful story, I kept tearing up! (and I was thrilled the speech was 100% non-political too).
The other thing.... so I've mentioned the Barker Twins and how they're the #1 NCAA dubs team in the country. I also just found out they're 18-0
as a team this year. BUT.... they also graduated Magna Cum Laude... to graduate with that you have to be in the top 15% of the graduating class, which is usually around a 3.9
I mean that to me is just
that they can be such amazing student-athletes in every sense of that word. I was walking out right in front of one of them and I wanted to say congrats to him but he hasn't a clue who I am so that would've been weird. But man, that's just amazing to me.
