Brooklyn Decker has appeared in the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue the past five years and graced the cover in 2010, a streak of success unequaled by her beloved North Carolina Tar Heels.
An avid sports fan, Decker, 22, has two major loves: her husband, the tennis player Andy Roddick, and North Carolina basketball. She is shooting her first feature film, starring Jennifer Aniston and Adam Sandler. During a break, she took time to answer a few questions by e-mail. KAREN CROUSE
Q. You make the cover of Sports Illustrated and a month later, your beloved Tar Heels miss the N.C.A.A. tournament.
It’s just a tough year for my Heels. They’re a young team, they have great players and amazing freshmen coming in, so I think they’ll grow into themselves next year.
Q. Did the joy of making the S.I. cover ease the pain of North Carolina’s lackluster season?
Absolutely!! My Heels got an S.I. cover around the same time last year, so I’m happy that I could bring another one home to North Carolina.
Q. What were you doing in 2004, the last time the Tar Heels didn’t earn a berth in the N.C.A.A. men’s tournament?
I was in high school cheering on the Carolina Panthers, who went to the Super Bowl that year. They were the saving grace for every U.N.C. fan.
Q. What was it like watching North Carolina’s nemesis Duke advance to the Final Four?
That’s never a fun feeling, but you can’t really fault U.N.C. when it won the championship last year. The Tar Heels made the final of the N.I.T. tourney, and I think it bodes well for them next year.
Q. Andy is a big Longhorns fan. How do you two peacefully coexist?
He’s actually an even bigger Nebraska fan, so the deal is that if I root for Nebraska football, he roots for the Heels during the tourney.
Q. How did you fare with your bracket last year?
Last year, my bracket didn’t do so hot, but does it matter when your team wins the championship? This year, I partnered with Sobe Lifewater Zero so that fans can win up to $10 million and a chance to meet me if they beat my bracket.
Q. Before Serena Williams posed for the S.I. swimsuit issue, did she ask you for advice?
Serena does not need my advice on how to model. She looked great in Sports Illustrated. They have the most creative team there, and when you throw in a hottie like her, you’ve got a great shoot.
Q. You’re filming a movie right now with Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston. How’s that going?
It’s surreal to go to work every day on this movie. I can’t imagine a better group of people to work with. I’ve been here for a week and I’m already getting clingy. They have to pry me away from the set.
Q. Your first wedding anniversary is this month. Will you and Andy even be in the same city?
Yeah. We will be together. I’ll be filming the movie in Hawaii, and he’ll be out there with me training.
