Tennis: The Scud is target for men's Open
Thursday December 7, 2006
By David Leggat

Big-serving Mark Philippoussis is in line to add spice to next month's Auckland international event.

Heineken Open officials hope to know by the weekend whether the Australian dubbed "The Scud" will take up one of three wildcards into the main draw for the $414,000 tournament, which starts on January 8.

The world No.114, 30, reached his career-high No 8 in 1999, has won 11 singles titles, pocketed US$6.9 million and was a finalist at both the US Open and Wimbledon. He was expected to play in Auckland last January but was a late withdrawal.

However, Open boss Graham Pearce was certain he would be a drawcard, though his finest years were behind him. "Absolutely," he said yesterday. "He's never played here before, obviously he's a colourful character and if he's on form he's a damn good player. I'm sure he'd be of interest to tennis fans."

The usual policy with wildcards is to give one to New Zealand's leading player. At the moment that is Dan King Turner, who is ranked No 464.

If Philippoussis took one and a prominent player came looking for a wildcard, Pearce said it was "a no-brainer" to give him the pass - the decision would be made smartly.

One player who has asked to get in, and will be coming to Auckland in any case, is Ecuadorean Nicolas Lapentti, who is ranked No 67 but who has been as high as No 6, and has won five titles. But Pearce is likely to keep an ear out for any late requests from higher ranked players.

Philippoussis Joins Ancic, Robredo, Nieminen In Auckland Field
By Tennis Week

It's not the notice of last call, but the allure of his first taste of a Heineken Open that has drawn Mark Philippoussis to Auckland. The two-time Grand Slam finalist has accepted a wild card to play the Heineken Open in Auckland, New Zealand next month.

The 114th-ranked Australian, who was once ranked as high as No. 8 in the world, owns 11 career singles titles to his credit and 11 final finishes. The 30-year-old Philippoussis won his first tournament title in nearly three years last July when he beat Paul Goldstein, Rik De Voest, Mardy Fish, Jurgen Melzer and Justin Gimelstob to capture the Newport grass-court crown. He also won the $50,000 Calabasas Challenger in California in October.

"It is a rare event to have a top Australian player in New Zealand and quite a coup for the tournament," Heineken Open tournament director Graham Pearce said. "We’re obviously pleased to have Mark play in Auckland for the first time. And we trust we can launch Mark [on a] successful year."

Philippoussis joins seventh-ranked Tommy Robredo, ninth-ranked Mario Ancic, former French Open champion Juan Carlos Ferrero and defending champion Jarkko Nieminen of Finland in the field at the 2007 Heineken Open set for January 8-13.

The 24-year-old Robredo has won two tournament titles this year — the Tennis Masters Series-Hamburg where he defeated Ancic in the semis and Radek Stepanek in the final and the Bastad championship.

Ancic won two titles in 2006 taking home the trophies at ‘s-Hertogenbosch and St. Petersburg plus made three finals including the Heineken Open, Beijing and Marseille. The 22-year-old Ancic advanced to the 2006 Heineken Open final without dropping a set and defeating the defending champ Fernando Gonzalez as well as Andy Murray, Mark Nielsen and Stanislas Wawrinka. In Grand Slams this year Ancic had highlights on the clay at Roland Garros and the grass at Wimbledon reaching the quarters at both, but meeting Roger Federer on each occasion. Previously he made the semis at Wimbledon in 2004, falling to Andy Roddick.

World No. 15 Nieminen treated the Auckland crowd to one of the tournament's most thrilling matches in years when he overcame Belgian Olivier Rochus, 6-4, 6-7(4), 7-6(4) in the semifinals. In the final, Nieminen overwhelmed Ancic, 6-2, 6-2, to snap a streak of four straight final losses. Earlier in the tournament, he beat Marcos Baghdatis in the first round, Paul Goldstein in the second and Nicolas Massu to make the semis.

The Heineken Open featuring the Sovereign singles and doubles will be held at the ASB Tennis Centre, No. 1 Tennis Lane, Par nell January 8-13, with the first two rounds of qualifying set for Saturday, January 6 and Sunday, January 7 at the More FM Tennis Park, Albany.
