NEW DELHI: India will host the inaugural Asian Hopman Cup mixed team tennis championships to start from November 13.

The $70,000 prize money event has been allotted to the All India Tennis Association by the Asian Tennis Federation for a period of three years and the winner will be given an entry into the main draw of the Hyundai Hopman Cup.

The Asian Tennis Federation and the Hopman Cup are entering into an agreement for having the event every year before the annual Hyundai Hopman Cup, which is held in Perth, Australia in December-January.

The International Tennis Federation recognises it as first official mixed team competition.

The winner will take home a purse of $20,000 and the runner-up will be richer by $12,000 as top Asian nations Thailand, Chinese Taipei, Japan, Uzbekistan and China, besides India, have been invited to participate in the prestigious event.

Philippines will be the first reserve side in the event which is tipped to be the biggest team competition in the continent, Asian Tennis Federation said in a statement.

Asian ace Paradorn Srichaphan of Thailand, Ai Sugiyama of Japan, Na Li of China, besides local challenges in the form of Leander Paes and Sania Mirza are likely to make appearances at the Asian Hopman Cup.

1. Thailand (THA)
2. Chinese Taipei (TPE)
3. Japan (JPN)

Philippines would be the first reserve team.
Leander Paes and Sania Mirza are the Indian team.

Does anyone know who else will play?

Re: Asian Hopman Cup: November 22-26, 2006

this seems like a really unprofessional event...no info, no website, no nothing

the only info i've found has come from wtaworld..

Leander Paes is going to miss the tournament due to injury & is to be replaced by Rohan Bopanna:

http://www.dnaindia.com/report.asp?NewsID=1065288

As per local newspapers , Chinese Taipei will be represented by Ti Chen & I-Hsuan Swang who have alreay arrived at the venue.

Other teams Japan, China, Thailand and Iran will arrive on tuesday night. So, it seems Iran replaced Uzbekistan. No news yet on other teams.

Re: Asian Hopman Cup: November 22-26, 2006

Well, Danai Udomchoke (THA) is currently playing a Challenger tournament in Australia, so i guess he's not playing for Thailand in this competition... my best guess for team Thailand line-up would be Paradorn Srichaphan and Tamarine Tanasugarn

If that's the case, then it's likely to be a fight for the spot between India and Thailand. Can't see anyone else challenge for the spot...

Re: Asian Hopman Cup: November 22-26, 2006

From looking at the lines-up from Team Thailand, i don't think we're taking it too seriously... nothing more than giving young ones some experience of playing abroad... If we can beat Taiwan (which is unlikely) to go into the Finals against India, we'll lose anyway...
