BUENOS AIRES - Tennis player Juan Martin del Potro announced Tuesday morning that he was going to have his right wrist operated in the United States, and said "false and malicious rumours" about his mental and physical condition were circulating.
Through a letter which DyN have access to, Del Potro, who has not played since January 24 when he lost in the quarter-final in Australia, said: "Today, Tuesday, May 4, I will be operated in the ulnar tendon of the carpal extensor in my right wrist. The operation will be conducted by Doctor (Richard) Berger, a specialist in the field, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. Throughout this year, I've wanted to avoid surgery with different treatments, but obviously the injury was too serious", the world number five player said, who denied having suffered any mental issues that delayed his return to the circuit.
"I decided to write because I want them to know by my own words of what is happening to me", claimed the tennis player, who said that "throughout this year I wanted to avoid surgery with different treatments, but obviously the injury was too serious" .
In a letter addressed to his followers, Del Potro said that "as soon as I arrived in the United States, the doctor made tests on the court and various studies to locate the points of pain. It was there where he made the decision to conduct the operation."
"As you all understand, this is not a happy moment in my life. But I'm used to fighting adversity and I have the strength to get over this. For that reason, I wanted to give the news myself," he said. According to the athlete, "unfortunately, false and malicious accounts on my mood and my physical condition were being circulated. I can't make clear what does not exist. But that bogus information not only affects my family, my team and the people who care about me. It also affects all of you who end up reading news that are not true", he said in the letter.
"The recovery time is long but it depends on many factors that can't be measured yet. I will spend the first days of post-operative here (United States) and then return to my country, where I will inform you of every step of my recovery more precisely. I understand your anxiety, but I hope you can understand what I'm going through", he continued.
Finally, he expressed his desire to "thank all the fans who showed me unconditional support. Those who I came across in the streets in my country and those who encouraged me from anywhere in the world via Internet." "Now I need you more than ever. You're amazing and the strength you give me will be a great motivation to return. That's the way it will be and we'll enjoy it together," he said.
This news clip is also in Spanish ... looks like a pretty good article about Juan's injuries. Wish I could understand it. Good footage of Delpo, especially at the end. We love you, Juan. Please get well and come back to us ASAP!
awwww ... I so agree with you. I never heard or read anything negative against him, but this part really got me!
