Re: Nikola Ciric

Good win for Niko today against a player ranked a few places higher - 7-5,7-6(6) win against Gensse. Should have a very decent chance of a QF slot here as well - next round he'd be expected to play Klec, someone he surely has an excellent chance again. Well done Nik!!!

Re: Nikola Ciric

Good win indeed. Why didn't he play for so long?
Last match was AO qualis, that's a month ago. Was he waiting for clay court challengers?

Not sure - but it follows his pattern last year - he barely played in the first 5 months, and then had a very heavy second half of the season. I was a little surprised he didn't have a look at the South American events and challengers at this point in the season. The nice thing for him is, he reall has nothing to defend until the summer. If he can get one or two semi final appearances or better in challengers in the next 2-3 months, he could be pushing the top 150 by the time we reach Roland Garros.

Maybe he treats January as his off season - he played until pretty late in 2010 - until the middle of December.....

Anyway, he's on the list for Tangiers next week (pretty much the same list as this week, so a good draw, and could be another little boost for him), but then nothing else that I can see. It'll be interesting to see if he sticks to challengers for now, or if he moves up to full ATP qualies as we enter the European clay court swing in a month or so. I'm guessing he'd have a decent chance of getting a qualification place in some of the lesser 250 events.

I'm still bemused as to why he plays so much clay though, with that serve. Another 10 aces yesterday. Must be huge on a hardcourt or grass!

Re: Nikola Ciric

Yeah, maybe that's it, he just really only wants to play on clay. That could be a reason why he hasn't played for a month, there were no challengers on clay. Just one in Colombia, but you don't travel to SA for just that.

But it stays strange that he is only playing on clay with that serve. If you look at a guy like Raonic, who can win an ATP tournament with that serve.

Quite disappointing lately. Just lost to Thomas Fabbiano in Rome...

He hasn´t had an good 2011 soo far, but he is in the quallies for Roland Garros. Today he took out the 14 seed Jesse Huta Galung (NED), 6-4 6-7 12-10, in nearly 3 hours in play. Next up an tough match against Franco Skugor CRO.

It's not going to be easy, but i give him more chance than you. His serve is looking back to it's best today, 22 aces in a clay court match is monster. He served at 70% and won like 85% of his 1st serve points - and Galung is a pretty solid player at this level.

He saved 2 match points at 8-9 in the last set, but missed a match point in the second set. Hopefully he won't be too tired.

Ciric is through to the third round after Skugor retired 3-6 3-2. David Guez or Van Der Merwe next up!

Yep. It was a tight game with Skugor, only 3 breakpoints in total in the whole match - Skugor took his in the first set. A little rest will do him some good, he must consider this a genuine chance now to reach a first grand slam. He's a bit young to break Dusan's world record, but it would be a nice achievement for him anyway. I'm desperate for him to play wimbledon, I have to see what that serve does on grass, especially on the quick courts at Roehampton for the qualies

Re: Nikola Ciric

Tight, tight match so far, 5-5 with Guez in the first set. Very serve dominated match so far, only a couple of opportunities early on for Guez to break. Niko hasn't got past 30 on the Guez serve.

Re: Nikola Ciric

3-3 in the breaker now, Ciric up to 8 aces first set. This could be a looooooong one.

Re: Nikola Ciric

Niko gets the first set on a tiebreak and then goes down 0-40 at the start of the second! Grrr.

Re: Nikola Ciric

what a terrible start to the second set. Drops his serve to 0 and then fails to convert from 0-40 in the next game

Doesn't look good now. Lost the second set 2-6 and is a break down in the third
