Why is it expensive? I mean, I know the bikes are expensive but what else about the sport is expensive?
Bikes are expensive, yes, 1000 euro or more for one bike if you want it to be good. And they need their bikes good in order to be able to compete for top positions. Then there's also all the gear, the helmet, special protective clothing against injuries (it's mandatory). Also the money to their club where they practice, the instructor and such. And competitions cost something too. The fuel price to go to all corners of Latvia in summer weekends is significant. And also - don't forget there are two of them so everything is double (except the fuel price). And the average monthly salary in Latvia is something like 700-750 euros.
Also, their father wants them to keep improving and for that they need to start going to competitions elsewhere in Europe because they're already pretty much at the top in Latvia. That would mean even more expenses. So they're looking for sponsors and I would help of course but my help is not enough. Their future in BMX depends on whether they can gather enough money. The Olympic BMX champion Maris Strombergs said one season cost him about 10,000 euros when he was growing up.
Yesterday evening, I was babysitting and when both girls were in bed, I borrowed a book to keep myself amused.
It was a horror book and I had no music on or so (so, a silent room). In the middle of reading about ghosts & monsters from hell
, I heard scratching.
It scared the bejesus out of me until I discovered it was their pet bunny.
