Metis, I heard yesterday that it would cost for every UE citizen some 850 euros to help Greece get out of the financial slump
and they said most rich Greek weren't paying any taxes
well, most probably bollocks, those numbers are scary to say the least...
That sounds too much, 255 billion euros? There is a lot of tax evasion from professionals running small, independent businesses like for example real estate developers, doctors, lawyers. But people living on salaries and corproations cannot evade.
It is complex because small professionals carry political clout, so tax evasion is associated with corruption and inefficiencies in the taxing agency. Actually IMF carries a lot of experience in this topic but so far we have not seen much improvement here
we still pay, bilateral agreements aren't free
Totally true, Norway and Switzerland contribute to EU funds despite not being members of the EU.
That number does sound excessive. I don't know who made that estimate and how they did it, so I cannot tell you if it is true or complete crap.
A lot of things are being said about Greece that are not true on this subject. Not to mention the dozens of millions of euros (or more perhaps) that have been put on bets
that Greece will go bankrupt.
Seems a lot of people want to see that happen.
The rich finding ways to avoid paying taxes is nothing new. The rich will always have it easy, crisis or no crisis. In any case the situation is really bad for the rest of us. Salaries and pensions being slashed, unemployment rate going up etc...
Sadly it is worse than simple bets. The "sovereign debt insurance" product, initially served a function as insurance: Imagine, say, that the pension fund of Belgium teachers has invested in bonds issued by Greece to augment the pension returns. A perfectly legit motivation that they buy insurance for these assets because if Greece defaults, the retirees will see a cut in their benefits. The problem is that there are "naked" claims around, that is speculators holding the insurance without holding Greek debt. That creates disturbing incentives, similarly to owning fire insurance on your (potentially unpleasant) neighbor's house
Yes there were violent incidents but there was also a 24 hour strike for all media, so we didn't get any news until today.
I cannot understand how media can choose to go on strike when there will certainly be newsworthy facts on the day.
CNN Breaking news : a member of a tennis message board, menstennisforums, has checked into a hospital in Lausanne, Switzerland to have both his testicles removed. A spokesperson said that his friends tried to talk him out of it, but he insisted that he's a man of his words. His girlfriend considers suing the message board.
The Sun Breaking news: "Swiss man claims to have the ability to regrow testicles".
