Regarding the rain, I suppose what was meant is that the rain events are more intense but shorter. hence the same amount of water falls in half the time span, ergo twice as fast. alternatively; it could mean that the rain drops where perceived as being bigger.

When old quotes sound silly it is a strong indication that we understand them wrongly.

Most often it's all about applying a certain context and putting yourself into a suitable mindset based on the probable references.

Gosh, I AM bored.

Obviously there's quite a bit about Hamilton in it. As you know it took 36 ballots to elect Jefferson over Aaron Burr. Hamilton hated Jefferson, but got along well with Burr who was Princeton educated and debonaire. However, he thought Burr was disasterous for the country, so he engaged in a frantic letter writing campaign for Jefferson. I thought you would like this quote.

"It is a matter of character. Burr has none; Jefferson has at least pretentions of character."
Brilliant, just brilliant Thanks for that Why does the book end at 1815? The end of the Napoleonic wars?

I was shocked and overwhelmed during my first winter in Pittsburgh. I still am Mind you, Madison and Chicago were even worse

Happy to oblige This is King Demetrius, relatively unknown masterpiece from Constantine Cavafy: http://www.cavafy.com/poems/content.asp?id=213&cat=1

His Macedonian troops forsaking him,
and manifest their preference for Pyrrhus, —
Demetrius the King (a great-souled man
he was) did not at all, so people said,
act like unto a King. For he then went
and took off the majestic dress he wore
took off the purple shoes; and hastily
slipped into plain attire, and stole away:
behaving as behaves a common player,
who, having played his part upon the stage,
changes his dress and leaves the theatre.
