Ladies and gentlemen, the Rochus brothers:
The Rochus Brotherhood needs to shut up (Le Soir, blog)
Glad that I'm not the only one thinking that those two need to put a sock in it and get over their napoleon complex
(in case JM lurks, that's a Walloon writing that blog)
Edit: here's part of it (my quick translation during my lunch break)
Finally, Christophe Rochus. I didn’t want to read his words as they were published in the newspaper where I started my career (La Dernière Heure), but I could 't avoid it after seeing so many references to it. I’ve always loved the straight-forward side of Christophe but, there, he’s pathetic. In short, he says that Olivier should play the match against Nadal and that his would be a gala match for him, he says that Bemelmans will never reach the top 20 (and he’s betting his house on it), that he wants to be the DC captain and that his brother will not make the Davis Cup as his priority from now on…
Pathetic and stupid. Pathetic but at most, you could argue that he’s protecting his brother and that they’re united in brotherhood. But it’s above all stupid and mean. One, a Davis Cup match is, I repeat it, NOT a gala match. If Olivier wants to play a gala match, nobody will stop him. But this is an official competition. To say that Bemelmans will never reach the top 20…Perhaps but even then: so what? Who would have bet fifteen years ago, even one cent, on the odds of a top 50 ranking for Christophe? Somebody who has always complained about the fact that people confused him with his brother and that nobody took him seriously! Somebody who today has discredited a player who will be in his team should he become the DC captain one day to claim the job of Willems. Because, Ruben - whether he reaches the top 20 or not -will be one of the few key players in the future of the Belgian team.
To go on by saying that Olivier will perhaps never play Davis Cup again, is another demonstration of the Rochus brotherhood – like other brothers have already shown in others sports – wanting to always dictate their law. Need I remind them that it’s partly the Rochus brothers who once forbad the return of Malisse? Need I remind them that the dictatorship within the team has often been inspired by Olivier and Christophe? (the fact that Norman was not selected for this team is also linked to their orders, even if the captain shared their opinion). Need I remind them that Christophe did not always honor his selection either? No, frankly, the Rochus brotherhood needs to calm down. They are not the McEnroe brothers. Even if they were, what would that change?
