My brother again asks me if it's stupid, but I don't want to give him my advice only. He had started with a 2HBH because when he was a kid his arms were weaker. Now that he's stronger he's developed a OHBH as well, and he sent me a video of him hitting it and it looks surprisingly solid considering he plays both now. Match wise, is this a really stupid approach? I get that both have their advantages, but I doubt he can balance them both.
Not at all. Whatever works for you . I played a guy that hit two handed backhands if a heavy ball was coming in and one handed for passing shot . He was Portuguese . Very very frustrating for me . He played great . Was way too good.
I think it is good to be able to hit both single & double handed backhands and if able too, add a slice backhand to the mix and as long as he has a gameplan for when to use each shot then having those options will be handy to have and it keeps the other player on their toes because they wont know which one to expect and if as happens, one version of the backhand isn't working then you can change to the other.
I hit both single handed and double handed backhands and I find being able to hit with both pretty handy.
