Dead tennis balls

How is one supposed to know when the tennis balls we are using are no longer good and we need to buy new ones? What is the most effective way to tell?

Here's how I tell... I hold my hand with the ball about waist-level high and then release the ball, and if I have to reach down to grab the ball off the bounce then I know it's flat.

Re: Dead tennis balls

I squeeze it and it if it is compressible at all, I deem at as practice worthy, at the most. In other words, not fit for matchplay. Then when I'm practicing, I'll bin a ball as soon as I feel fit, generally when it isn't bouncing more than a half-a-foot from my opponents slices.

Re: Dead tennis balls

You should be able to tell right away while rallying with a partner, it is definitely obvious especially if you use a lot of new balls. When I go out and have a hitting session, I normally go through several cans of tennis balls each time. Of course it depends too, if you guys aren't beating on the ball or the level of play isn't too high, you probably could get by with a can for quite a while. However, once your skill gets high enough, you'll definitely want to play with fresh balls as much as you can. It can throw you off quite a bit if you don't!

Eh? even the freshest of balls aren't going to bounce back up, not even close.

I'm short And I use a little bit of force, but not much. It's just whatever feels right

Only true way is to go out and hit. From the first bounce you'll notice the difference anyways.

Indeed. You have to have never played Tennis for more than a week to not know if it's dead
