Re: What should I be doing for fitness in tennis?

start cycling. it will help you develop serious endurance while keeping your knees healthy. its little or no impact which is great for knees.

i would say that you start by doing about 100 miles a week.

buy a bike and install a cyclocomputer on it and get to work.

just average about 12 miles an hour the first 3 weeks. average 15 mph the 4th week and keep it at that level. that is good enough for developing endurance for tennis.

and then you can do some interval training with your running on soft surfaces.

You're new here so let me fill you in.

1. YOU DO NOT TALK ABOUT MTF
2. YOU DO NNOTTT TALK ABOUT MTF
3. ONLY TARD POSTS ABOUT FEDAL, NOLE, OR MURRAY ALLOWED
4. YOU CAN ONLY START 1 TARD POST ABOUT YOUR FAVORITE TARD PLAYER AT A TIME
5. YOU MUST BE A TARD TO POST IN MTF, preferably A TOP 5 PLAYER
6. LOGIC, MODERATION, or SANITY IS NOT ALLOWED IN MTF
7. TARD RANTS AND TARD WAR THREADS WILL GO ON AS LONG AS THEY HAVE TO.
8. LASTLY, IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST NIGHT AT MTF YOU HAVE TO START A TARD THREAD.

If you want actual discussion about how to improve your own tennis, this is not the place for you. We only care about flame wars and crap rants about Federer and Nadal. No one cares about you.

Re: What should I be doing for fitness in tennis?

Tennis is a game of repeated short springts over 3-5 meters on average. In between you have 20 seconds rest. That is how you should practice for tennis fitness. Going running for long distance might not hurt you but it is not very efficient!

There are plenty of exercises you can do on a tennis court that mimic tennis movements. Do those at high intensities for anywhere between 5-20 seconds and rest in between. Work in intervals like this and you will get in good tennis shape.

Good Luck!

Try different tennis drills to improve your game. I personally use the drills from below link and were very effective. Try it out.

I think footwork agility is the most important to start with. Then cycling and weightlifting.

I agree, cycling can be great for the legs. Anytime you strengthen your core and muscles you will see an improvement in your game.

I have tons of articles about tennis specific fitness on my tennis fitness site. Including strength, explosiveness, injury prevention (stretching and myofascial release, kettlebell training, etc... pretty much everything you need to improve your fitness for tennis. Pay good attention to your body and its imbalances, because they create overuse injuries over time. In your physical training, make sure to even out all the imbalances.

Re: What should I be doing for fitness in tennis?

My favorite practice is 400m sprint, 200m walk, 5x200m sprint with 100 m walk in between, and finish with 10x100m with 20 sec rest. If you are starting now, in 1 year you will be able to do this practice right.

For how long would you do this drill? 20 minutes? 30?

Re: What should I be doing for fitness in tennis?

Do mostly aerobic exercise and mix it with some weights, preferably not too heavy but lots of repetitions that develop the arm and shoulder muscles and the core.

Also some light weights for quadriceps are ideal, to help improve balance and short bursts of speed.
