Exclamation Head hunting...

I'm just wondering if anyone else has come across 'head hunting' while watching/playing doubles. Basically, it is when a player blatantly tries to smash the ball into their opponent's face.

I have a friend who is a really good player, but when things don't go his way he tries to hurt his opponents this way. He tried it earlier tonight in a match against me multiple times...just missing and I lost it and almost jumped the net to beat him up.

What is everyone's opinion on this? I'm clearly not going to play with my friend again, but people tell me it is perfectly legal and that there isn't much I can do.

Re: Head hunting...

It is legal but many would see it as being against the spirit of the game. I think that it's acceptable to hit your opponent as long as you don't seriously injure them.

But the face isn't the best area to go for anyway. The right hip is the best spot to aim for generally and the feet are the place to aim with smashes if the opponent is sitting there like a target. If a player is ready for a volley it's easier to return a ball that's heading for your face than towards your right hip. Also, if the ball is hit flat or with very little spin at your face and you dodge it then the ball will probably go long.

It's more of a statement saying 'I want to win at all costs, including putting you in hospital'.

Re: Head hunting...

It is certainly legal and would win them the point...not the best sportsmanship if it's intentional though.

I hate it when someone does this and no apology is given out. That's when I wait for a sitter forehand on top of the net to shove it down their throat

Re: Head hunting...

It isn't illegal at all like the posters have said here, but very unsportsmanlike. However the payment is the feeling you get after you beat them. It is always such a tremendous feeling when you defeat someone who does something like that or calls bad lines or whatever.

Federer / Haas / Safin / Gaudio / Kuerten / Youzhny / Nadal / Gonzalez / Ljubicic / Hewitt / Soderling / Wawrinka / Coria / Nalbandian / Kohlschreiber

Leander Paes is the best in the world at this.

Peter Polansky
Nestor - Chvojka - Pospisil - Raonic - Peliwo
