Odd opponents you've had?

A thread for talking about opponents you've played that had odd effective styles strokes and personas.

I still believe in the one-handed backhand.

Re: Odd opponents you've had?

Ahh, great thread. I could name quite a few but I'm at work at the moment on minimal sleep and brain isn't really in gear yet.

Played a mixed doubles match the other week with a particularly aggressive guy at the other side of the net. He stood an inch from the service line as I was serving to the lady and was leaning over into the line of the serve! I was in a kind mood and didn't fire any serves down straight into his face or mid-section. He also had some classic frying pan volleys.

I've played singles against a few double handed forehands which is always weird.

I'll come up with some better stories later once I've woken up!

Re: Odd opponents you've had?

Good idea for a thread.

My most memorable was from a couple of years ago: a real "moonballer"...actually more like a Lob Queen. Every shot. I mean. Every shot. Was a freakin' lob.

I had just started on a new team, it was the first match of the season, had a new partner (who was not thrilled to be separated from her regular partner)...and damnit if we didn't lose. 6-4,2-6,6-4 in the third after a crappy line call at breakpoint down.

It still burns.

I've since gotten my revenge over her. A very sound -love and -1 thumping...but I'll never forget that match.

I love my girls.

Re: Odd opponents you've had?

I've played a player who only sliced both off FH and BH.

Good quality slices?

I still believe in the one-handed backhand.

Re: Odd opponents you've had?

brilliant thread

I can't think of odd opponents, but I can think of odd scores

although I'm sure there's another thread about that

have I just given this thread the KoD?

Re: Odd opponents you've had?

good

then who has "odd opponents" to talk about?

EDIT: actually let me just describe my playing partners. One likes to hit sixes with his tennis racquet. And one sits in NML all the time - and wins

Re: Odd opponents you've had?

Well, I posted this one on the Mug Tennis -thread, but since this is also related to this one, I think I'll share.

A little background info here, I play in a university student's tennis league/group here in Finland. I started last spring and have been working my way up the rankings. The system is so that the season is divided into smaller rounds, and with each round you are put in a group of peers. Then you organize matches with those players and put the results on the web. After each round, the web page reorganizes the groups based on results, that is it demotes some people and promotes some people.

This system is actually pretty nice and flexible, you can play matches whenever it's good for you and you don't have to register as an official competitor in the Finnish league and enter lower tournaments that have something like 30€ enter fees or something...

Anyways, my opponent turns up and it's a 35-year old man (you don't have to be a student to play, but then the membership is more expensive). He's hung over and enjoys a nice cold beer after the warm up... In addition I was hitting my first serve very well, so I only needed to get it in and I'd won the point... I don't know whether it consitutes as even excercise . Well, at least I hugely improved my Games won / Games lost stat...

Also, I played against someone who works at the Finnish armed forces (I was very polite during that match !), who had a weird habit of serve and volleying off rather poor first serves... He played weirdly also, with no topspin BH etc. Pretty easy match for me, but his game still managed to get me off my rhythm.

Only Del Potro can take him out before the semis, and he won't. Nadal is winning the AO, bet your house on it.
Somewhere out there, there is a homeless person who once took betting advice from GSMnadal

I use to do that against anyone who was better than me from the baseline.

A million slices and come to the net the second I could.

Re: Odd opponents you've had?

My most recent opponent was this Asian dude who first off, spoke very limited English and as I warmed up with him, he decided to crush as many forehands as possible. He's a leftie with a two handed backhand yet I realized he was serving right-handed and then swapping his stick over into his left hand immediately afterwards. He had solid groundstrokes but I came out really aggressive and took a 4-0 lead, only for him to start completely throwing me off my game by some heavy, heavy slices followed by some petty, almost stupid drop shots that wouldn't ever usually work but they seemed to do the trick. He moonballed high and deep into my backhand and since I'm a short guy (5'7, I think), that wasn't too easy to handle and he at some stage screamed ADJE!, Ivanonic style, after defending quite well in a rally and then passing me off an approach. Twas just weird. I got too passive, my serve kinda fell apart and the set ended up going to a tiebreaker which after saving two match points, I just barely missed a backhand pass DTL to lose. It was a horrible match that left me gutted from the defeat but I think the most bizarre part was when he was 15-30 down at 0-3 in the set and missed a first serve, which prompted him to underarm one in with NO spin and it sat right up so nicely that I almost forgot what to do. Yes, I did end up crushing an off FH as hard as I could for the winner but after it I just stood there confused and stunned at the fact that he threw that in there in such strange fashion at a time which gave me two break points. Odd, odd opponent...

Vamos Rafa

Re: Odd opponents you've had?

Sunday I played a guy and almost EVERY first serve was miles out or in the net or not even reaching the net. His second serve was so soft that I punished every single time. He was lucky to have a (female) partner who did hit a lot of first serves

That annoys me a lot, you shouldn't be on the court playing a competitive match if you can't even control your serve. More often than not these guys have awesome groundstrokes, and you can tell their practice sessions are constant baseline drills and nothing else.

The kids see someone like Nadal at the top of the sport and think all they need is powerful groundies, then it's a shock for them when they lose every match because they hit 20 double faults and can't volley.
