Re: Shots you DON'T have in your arsenal

Update.

In this off-season, my mixed partner has been working with me on my overheads and an aggressive FH. Both are coming along...the OH much faster than the FH. We decided to shorten the process, working on placement short in the service box and angled off rather than hitting it for power. A hard smash looks impressive but what we've come up with...works. It's consistent and I don't panic anymore.

As for the attacking FH, that's merely coming along. I'm still hesitating and not really getting a good jump on the ball. I seem to hit it better cross-court and in a "singles" situation; still need to work on the DTL shots to both the FH and BH sides.

Still...it's a work in progress.

I love my girls.

Re: Shots you DON'T have in your arsenal

I have big problems executing a proper slice, I think it's due to me having two-handed backhand since the very beginning (yeah I know I wish I could play a one-handed like Roger ) , my slice lands on the net 90% of the time, I also panic on overheads and rarely go for them except if I'm right at the net, otherwise I return with a rally backhand (backhand is my favorite shot).

I would like to improve my topspin forehand and my serve (although it's pretty good given that I'm 6'3 ).

my secret weapon is the dropshot, especially a service return dropshot, since I've started playing tennis I've always had this shot with me (maybe got the wrist feel from being a competitive table tennis player I dunno ).

Are you gripping the racquet right for your slice? I prefer the continental grip as I feel you have most control and can be more aggressive this way, although a lot of amateurs seem to use a forehand grip these days - I feel this makes it float a lot more and will be punished by good players. Make sure you don't chop down at the ball either, this could be what's taking the power out of your shot and causing it to hit the net. Think nice smooth motion through the ball, think Roger Federer in fact - no finer example of a great slice shot.

Wish I had your height!

Watch Hingis tapes. Her slice overhead is legendary. It was never hit hard but the slice and placement often won the point.

Backhand slice approach has deserted me at the moment, keep hitting the damn thing six feet long!

Re: Shots you DON'T have in your arsenal

I have a huge problem putting away easy volleys. I tend to have a very bad habit of slicing the ball when I volley. Having good put away volleys would make things so much easier for me against pushers. FH DTL also needs some work but ya my volleys are the worst.

Are you knifing the ball down?

Trying to.

I think it's mostly that I'm trying to hit the perfect approach shot each time to compensate for the lack of confidence in my net game at the moment, and just end up rushing it and overplaying it. We'll see though, I think it just needs a small adjustment. I'm always happier over-hitting shots than dumping them into the bottom of the net - that just crushes your confidence.

I know how you feel. I do the same exact thing on my approach shots to compensate for my terrible volleys. Unfortunately for me I hit some really crap volleys even when I hit really good approach shots. Even though my volleys are trash, I still try to get to the net more often than not because I am very impatient when I play someone consistent from the baseline. If I had a bit more patient I can hit against them shot to shot from the baseline but I just really have issues with my patience.

Not much of a WTA fan here...and even less so of Hingis.

But I'll try to youTube some of her stuff.

I will say this though: I got the rare chance to play against my hitting/mentoring partner the other day...and had several OH winners against him...on his side. While he was disappointed he lost the point, afterwards, he shared how pleased he was that I'd taken his tutoring to heart.

Re: Shots you DON'T have in your arsenal

My backhand is pretty poor when someone doesn't give me pace. Give me pace and I can hit it every direction, angle it, whatever, but give me no pace and it will land no further than the service line 80% of the time.

Re: Shots you DON'T have in your arsenal

Backhand drive return of serve. I tend to slice it a lot (or run around and smack a quality forehand), but my slice is usually floaty and can if my opponent closes the net, I'm in trouble.

My backhand in rallies is far too hit or miss as well, and my serve is as consistent as Safin

Another thing I want to work on is my net play. Far too often I'll set up the point nicely with some sick forehand angles and close the net with an open court to volley into, only to dump it into the net
