From L'équipe today, he explains he didn't want to play Marseille first, that's why he didn't enter the tournament in time, but after his early loss in Australia and Zagreb, he decided to ask for a WC.
He also comments on the DC, which is one of his dreams, he didn't react to his non-selection like Monfils "because nobody asked me!" He has a better ranking than Monfils in singles, he can play in singles and doubles, but this is apparently not enough. He doesn't want to drive himself nuts because of that, Forget trusts a group of players he doesn't belong to yet, it's up to him now to show he deserves to be there:

C’est un mauvais concours de circonstances qui l’y a contraint, malgré un début d’année prometteur à Chennaï : « Ensuite, ce qui est arrivé en Australie ne m’a pas aidé. » Battu par Gasquet à Adélaïde, Benneteau termina au bord de l’évanouissement son premier tour de l’Open d’Australie par une chaleur intenable face à Capdeville. « Cette défaite a été un coup d’arrêt, concède le quart-finaliste du dernier Roland-Garros. Dans ma tête, je me voyais disputer le tournoi de Zagreb, puis, éventuellement, faire partie de la Coupe Davis. Mais je n’ai pas été sollicité… » On sent comme une crispation chez l’actuel troisième meilleur Français au classement ATP : « Comme j’ai perdu au premier tour à Zagreb et que je n’ai pas été pris en Coupe Davis, je me suis trouvé à cours de match dans l’optique de disputer Memphis la semaine prochaine, où j’ai des points à défendre. Voilà pourquoi j’ai demandé une wild-card ici. » La Coupe Davis, c’est le rêve de Benneteau qui y a déjà goûté par deux fois : « Je ne veux plus me prendre la tête avec ça. Pour l’heure, le capitaine fait confiance à des joueurs parmi lesquels je ne suis pas. »
Guy Forget lui avait dit de se tenir prêt, au cas où… Mais Benneteau n’a pas reçu d’appel. Et pendant que Gaël Monfils clamait son mécontentement, Benneteau brilla par son silence : « C’est surtout qu’on ne m’a rien demandé ! Ce qui est à la fois logique et illogique. Parce que je suis mieux classé que Gaël (52e), que sur les six derniers mois, il n’y a pas photo sur nos résultats, et que je peux jouer en simple et en double. Mais apparemment, cela ne suffit pas… À moi de prouver que l’on peut me faire confiance. » Au prochain tour, Benneteau affrontera le vainqueur du match entre Arnaud Clément, tenant du titre, et David Ferrer (15e).
