Tennis is a crazy sport
I have arrived in Tiburon, where Iíll be playing my third tournament in a row in California. Unfortunately I didnít get past the first round last week in Sacramento, where I lost to Daniel Evans. Losing in the first round is always tough, but playing Evans was a very difficult draw for me.
He was on a hot streak, having reached the third round of the US Open a few weeks ago. I didnít play my best, but Iím trying to look at the positives.
Tennis is a crazy sport, because you basically lose every week. Every tournament only has one winner. Thatís something you have to deal with. Youíve got to work on having a short memory. The good thing in our sport is that thereís always another week. I actually feel like Iím hitting the ball well. I just need to improve my serve, which hasnít been the weapon it usually is for me.
Iíve been having a bit of a shoulder issue for about four or five months now, which occasionally means I have to take it easy with my serve in practice. Iíve had an MRI done, which showed no serious issue. I just take a lot of Advil :-). Hopefully by Monday, when the tournament gets underway, Iíll be serving bombs!
These tournaments in California are all incredibly nice and played in great locations. This week Iím staying in a house with a lady that my mom grew up playing tennis with in Florida. We stayed here last year as well. The house has a swimming pool and a basketball court in the back, so Iím definitely getting spoiled!
I actually stay in housing families a lot when Iím playing tournaments in the US. This is a service that many tournaments in this country offer to the players and I always enjoy staying with a family and getting to know about them. Most of the time I do this together with my coach.
I have good memories from the tournament in Tiburon from last year, when I reached the quarterfinals. I ended up losing to the eventual champion, when Jack Sock beat me in three sets. Iím looking forward to another great week!
