Rhyne clinches the 1st set 6-2, keep going! Hope he can finish it in 3/4 sets. It is safe to say that he won't win if it goes to 5

Top American performers at USTA Pro Circuit tournaments to receive 2013 FO WC

Quote:
For the second consecutive year, the USTA Pro Circuit will be utilized to determine wild cards into the French Open.

In the newly named Har-Tru USTA Pro Circuit Wild Card Challenge, the American man and American woman who earn the most ATP World Tour and WTA tour ranking points at two of three USTA Pro Circuit clay-court events will receive wild cards to compete in the main draws at 2013 Roland Garros.

The men’s events included in the challenge are the $100,000 Challenger in Sarasota, Fla., held the week of April 15; the $50,000 Challenger in Savannah, Ga., held the week of April 22; and the $50,000 Challenger in Tallahassee, Fla., held the week of April 29. The women’s tournaments consist of the $50,000 event in Dothan, Ala., held the week of April 15; the $50,000 event in Charlottesville, Va., held the week of April 22; and the $50,000 event in Indian Harbour Beach, Fla., held the week of April 29.

The USTA and the French Tennis Federation have a reciprocal agreement in which wild cards into the 2013 French and US Opens are exchanged.

American beauties

Five. Count them – five. After Steve Johnson, Denis Kudla and veteran Wayne Odesnik yesterday, Thursday saw another two Americans make it through to the final round of qualifying. Jack Sock – a man who racked up 80 victories in as many matches during his US college career, defeated Renzo Olivo 7-5, 6-4, while world No.121 Rhyne Williams swept aside Mathias Bourgue 6-4, 6-4, demonstrating a much sharper forehand than his opponent and certainly showing the young French hopeful how to manage a match.

Bourgue cut a dispirited figure after the match, saying: "I played not to lose rather than trying to win each point. I didn't play my real game – I didn't get behind my shots. I started off pretty well, but there came a point where I just stopped going forward. I needed to do better than that. I'm delighted to have featured at Roland Garros for the first time and won a match, but I can't be satisfied with that. I could have got through today."

Things are also rosy for USA's cousins from north of the 49thparallel. Three Canadians entered men's qualifying this year and all of them are through to the final round. On Thursday, Vasek Pospisil saw off a spirited Dusan Lojda 7-5, 7-6, while Franck Dancevic eliminated No.8 seed Matthias Bachinger 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/ne...328779178.html

The typos in the excerpt Sock did not play college tennis (the 80-0 wins are from his high school record). Kudla defeated Diez and Polansky, so not all of the Canadians made it to the final round.

Re: The "Anything Goes Grand Slams" Thread

Q-Final Round
(20)Steve Johnson (USA) d. (5)Adrian Ungur (ROU) 6-3 6-4
Somdev Devvarman (IND) d. (8)Wayne Odesnik (USA) 6-3 6-4
(11)Denis Kudla (USA) d. Arthur De Greef (BEL) 7-6(5) 6-7(3) 6-2
(13)Jack Sock (USA) d. Facundo Arguello (ARG) 6-2 6-3
(22)Michal Przysiezny (POL) d. (15)Rhyne Williams (USA) 6-4 6-4

Quote:
“We’re obviously not that bad on clay after all!” said Denis Kudla, after the American had battled through in three sets over Belgium’s Arthur De Greef (7-6, 6-7, 6-2). The world No.117 who has a David Ferrer-type game had already had ‘enjoyed’ a long-three-setter in the second round which ended with a 15-13 win over Canada’s Peter Polansky.

With Steve Johnson (6-3, 6-4 over Adrian Ungur) and Jack Sock (6-2, 6-3 against Facundo Arguello) also qualifying, it meant that a trio of Americans had made it into the main draw – the best US performance in the qualifiers since 1982. Two of them came up short however, Rhyne Williams falling 6-4, 6-4 to Michal Przysiezny and Wayne Odesnik losing out to Somdev Devvarman (6-3, 6-4), though Williams made it through as a lucky loser. In the Canadian derby meanwhile, Vasek Pospisil dropped a mere two games to Franck Dancevic (6-2, 6-0). http://www.rolandgarros.com/en_FR/ne...416196021.html
