Re: Devin Britton

The stage is set for the upset of the millennium. Devin Britton will play Roger Federer in the first round of the U.S. Open. Britton's draw sets up beautifully if he gets past Federer.

Re: Devin Britton

I finally got around to watching his match against Federer, and I came away encouraged. He has a great chance of making it. He still shanks or overhits too many groundstrokes, but all the tools are there, and when he was connecting on his shots, he held his own. His serve will be a major weapon eventually and he has a natural feel at the net. I also liked his relaxed demeanor.

His serve is a tad quirky though. The commentators mentioned how he doesn't have a consistent rhythm while serving and seems to hit the ball at different heights. It can be an advantage, but it may also lead to inconsistency and limit the power of his serves. It's something for him to work on.

Between him and Harrison, I feel we at least have two young guys with a high probability of succeeding. Intertestingly, though, Patrick McEnroe keeps excluding Britton when he's asked about up-and-comers. Harrison and Domijan are the two he always mentions. I'd think that Britton would be the first or second name out of his mouth.

Re: Devin Britton

Devin's struggled a bit lately, but he's got a WC into San Jose and is playing Tommy Haas tomorrow.
Let's go Devin!

Re: Devin Britton

He lost 6-4, 7-6, which I consider a success. He served great. I don't know how he can play Haas tight and yet struggle to win two consecutive matches in Futures qualifying. Britton is the biggest enigma in American tennis right now.

Well. Focus and patient. That's problem for young talents like Devin

It's actually very simple, honestly. Look at the surface of every single one of these futures he has played in the last few months. They are all on a clay, a surface he is quite frankly awful on. This just reeks of USTA stupidity. Instead of letting a young guy build confidence early on in the pros on a surface that he is comfortable on, they are having him try and play on a surface that he is horrible on. With the style of game he plays his game will never be suited for clay. If he has DA to the French Open then fine, work on his clay game. But it seems counterproductive, at best, to have him on a surface that he's not gonna beat anybody on when he's trying to start his pro career well.

Anyway, rant over.
Devin's got a WC into the Brownsville HARDCOURT futures and he's got fellow WC former USC player Gary Sacks in the first round.

I was aware of that, but I didn't think the surface could make that much of a difference, especially since U.S. clay courts tend to be fast by clay court standards. But maybe it does for him.

He did also lose in the first of qualifying in Dallas, which is an indoor hard court. Can't blame that on surface.

That said, I do like Britton's game. The results should come eventally.

Re: Devin Britton

He just barely beat Sacks in Brownsville. Every match is difficult for Britton right now, no matter who the opponent is.

Re: Devin Britton

Well, he lost to Blake Strode in the second round. Disappointing.
