Diego Junqueira

Any Argentinian out there who can tell something about him ? I mean it is pretty
incrompehensible that a guy has his breakthrough with the age of 26. He is coming from Latinoamerica challenger/future tour has never achieved something big (OK this year he won one challenger but against not that strong opponents)
and then he comes to Stuttgart won two Qualy matches and then after saving MP against Rochus, beating Volandri in two !! Even Volandri is not as his best he is still classses above a guy from Junqueiras level. So who is this guy ? Was he good junior ?

Good luck to

Re: Diego Junqueira

Argentina is full of talented players that can't break through becouse of economic problems (hard to get sponsor, there is no $ support from argentina tennis federation). If we would have the $, support and tournaments that the "yankees" have, Argentina would have many more players into top 100.

But I never watched a match from Junqueira to answer your question xD

Re: Diego Junqueira

But still with this age very abnormal especially if you consider that the high ranked player he defeated before Stuttgart was Nicolas Devilderer !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Maybe anyobdy saw him against Rochus or Volandri live on court ?

Good luck to

Re: Diego Junqueira

I don't think it's that unnormal. From time to time it happens that a player like Junqueria is winning some matches on the tour. There isn't such a big gap between a player ranked 200 and a top 100 player. Volandri and especially Christophe Rochus have played very poorly in the recent weeks. And today we could see that Junqueira doesn't have any chance against a top player like Berdych.

Re: Diego Junqueira

I saw him playing in a challenger in Montevideo last year, I was there he is a typical challenger player, a hard work player who stands in the baseline and he returns all the balls. I feel happy for him he has a very good week like vassallo arguello in RG
maybe he can go in 100 for some months
but I think that vassallo arguello and hartfield and better than him, also Roitman

Re: Diego Junqueira

Junqueira is a 1.65 mts (I think) baseline player. His wins against Volandri and Rochus weren't big surprises to me, although I was expecting him to lose.

Re: Diego Junqueira

I agree it's not that uncommon that a player has his breakthrough in his mid twenties. Sometimes there are financial problems, sometimes there are injury problems, and also sometimes the good results come out of nowhere, even if there weren't major problems during this player's career.

Re: Diego Junqueira

Also another point view , the retiring age of sporting life has extended from early 30s to late 30s over the past 10-15 years in favourite sports like soccer, basketball and others. The need of helping business classes (mentors, psychiatrists, psychicians, nutrition scientists and etc.) is more than ever and also they have a great effect on the result directly. This means that if you are training well ,mentally in a peaceful situation, eating through the program which suits you best along with rational self-analysis and experience, you can still manage to have some carrer peaks at the ages of +30.

For Junqueira, it seems that he has just begun to explore himself. We cannot say this is "luck" at this level of tennis.I guess this tournament will give him a considerable leap on ATP ranking which makes me think that player qualities between 100 and 200 is nothing as ZackBusner has already stated.

Lightbulb Re: Diego Junqueira
