BSG #47: Sibling songs, Direct final, congrats to TheBigFourFTW!!!

(an Original idea by sfar.)

Welcome to the MTF Best Song Game!

47th Edition : Sibling songs

How to play?

Phase I: Anyone can commit to the game by sending me a YouTube link of your chosen song via PM. Please include the title "BSG song choice" for easy reference. The song must follow the theme rule as proposed below.
After this phase, I will reveal the lists of songs and players, without revealing which song was selected by whom.
Phase II: Vote for your favourite songs via PM titled "BSG SF votes" or "BSG F votes"
<29 songs: Direct Final.
29-40 songs: Semi-Finals, followed by a Final containing 20 SF songs.
After (each part of) this phase, I will reveal the votes, the points tally, and the player behind each song. After the SF, only the eliminated songs will be revealed.

The song with the most points wins!

Rules:

0. Anyone can participate

1. The theme of Game #47 is "Sibling songs"
chosen by Droog.

2. You have to vote for exactly 10 songs, in order of preference for each semifinal (i.e. 10 songs from SF1 and 10 from SF2). Your voted songs will receive points in the following format (inspired by the Eurovision Song Contest's voting system):
Code:
12 points: favourite song
10 points: 2nd favourite song
 8 points: 3rd favourite song
 7 points: 4th favourite song
 6 points: ...
 5 points: ...
 4 points: ...
 3 points: ...
 2 points: ...
  1 point: 10th favourite song
3. You can not vote for your own song.

4. You can not send a song selected in a previous game. One of the purposes of this game is to discover new music. For a list of these previously selected songs, check Post #4. The same song by a different artist/band is allowed.

5. Only committed players can vote. Eliminated semifinalists can also vote in the Final.

6. If you do not vote, your song will receive a 12 point penalty (in the phase in which you did not vote).

7. If the same song is sent by 2+ different players, the 2nd+ player who sent it will be asked to choose another one.

8. You can change your submitted song only once. But you can't change your votes!

9. If the manager is playing the game, he/she can send his votes to another player (so the latter can check if what is presented in the ceremony(-ies) matches with the votes sent via PM).

Other informations:

1. There MAY BE a musically themed interview via PM, which will be sent after the Semifinal ceremony. The answers to it will be revealed during the Final ceremony.

2. The theme (if wanted) of the next game will be selected by the winner of the current game.

Re: BSG #47: Sibling songs

@redshift36188 @ProudSerb @MWW @Sicario

the voting options for direct finals

(i know that noone thought about it during the Exhos, but...)
the points gap between 3rd and 4th that was applied in the Exhos and BSG#40 puts increased emphasis on the top3.
for 12 voting options the distribution 14-12-10-987654321 would have been better, i'd say.
but i (and MWW agreed) think that it's not even useful to add more big-pointers and to make the gap between first and last even bigger (than 12)
(as the low points would become worth even less than in our standard/Eurovision system).

so if we want to vote for more songs (than 10), i would suggest to simply add more 1-pointers (as odd as it seems).
it's not important for anyone to make separations between their bottom choices (10th,11th,12th,13th).

for reference here the first part of the discussion
and there an example with The Dodger himself:
Quote:

if we (adjust that exagg. 25 to 24 and) divide that Formula1 system by 2 we get:
12-10-987654-3.5-3-2.5-2-1.5-1-0.5
instead of our standard separation between 2nd and 3rd it adds one big-pointer,
but it also adds one very small "fry".
while all this looks better than Exho/BSG#40 (at least theoretically),
the difference to what i suggest (12-10-87654321-11111) is pretty small.

your entire top10 would be in order of preference with either distribution, Dodgy.

-----

and from there^ to my alternative idea is only a relatively short distance, that we'll now jointly cover.

alternative idea:
(regular voting systems have to rely on penalties and extra rules, which can cause trouble with casual BSG players and extra work for the managers.)
making the extra spots (1-pointers) optional altogether (one could even simply allow an indefinite number of these 1-pointers then)
would lead to a completely uncomplicated extra rule/option.
well, such extra 1-pointers (should you choose to award them) would marginally hurt the (statistical) chances of your own submission,
but i doubt that would bother us in practice (->see spoiler).

and it could easily be tested. (if someone doesn't read the OP/rules, no problem, they don't need to.)

thoughts prior to the test run:

1) i think that 50% of the BSGers have no desire anyway to vote for more than 10 songs.

2) and among the other 50%, who would have a problem if one of their extra 1-pointers surpassed their own submission by one point in the results?
it might only be relevant if it's for 1st/2nd/3rd place...

...but note that very often we can anyway guess where the rivals for these places sit
and strategically award them less points.
but i think hardly anyone is doing that in practice.
for instance the Comus song was a clear favorite for BSG#46. who awarded that song less points therefore?
this^ strategy would include some guesswork, but otoh it's about differences in the range of 10 !
1-pointers are much inferior to that.

...also, in BSG#46 two of my extra choices would have been Taynara and Kournikova.
neither was a podium candidate anyway.
and similar situations will happen again.
in many cases extra 1-pointers might be used for "nods" in the direction of some odd/bold submissions.

No need for this. When I am managing, old system will remain. Those songs that deserve points, will deserve. I reject that idea.

...the situation is that quite some BSGers want to vote for more songs.
but how many (BSGers) actually?
judging by Pratik's survey in BSG#9 i would guess it's (only) 50%.
that would speak in favor of an optional system
instead of forcing (and maybe even penalizing) players (for the oh so good cause).

Such a Proud Serb!

I hope you realize systems have to be evolved when new problems emerge in the old. I know you feel that at this point it complicates everything for you as a manager, with more numbers to count but if we are left with an awkward number of participants like 27 again and whole bunch of good songs, we won't be doing justice to all the songs in the current voting system.

Its up to you in the end. I'm just pushin'...

First part: Well, I opened early, asked Droog to change something before I am putting the deadline for submitting songs.

Second part: You can do this, but not in my game. I know there are people who are struggling to rank 10 songs, what will happen with 15 then?

Third part: I am open to new ideas, but for this one, only I can do is changing the description when Droog want any kind of "precise description"

Ok, I have a compromise. You can choose any group as long as 50% of the members are siblings; so a group of 3 needs 2 siblings, a group of 5 needs 3 siblings and so on. Sibling duos obviously still count. Lyrics can be sung by anybody I guess.
@ProudSerb use Discogs or Rateyourmusic if you're unsure about members, because backing or session musicians wouldn't count.
