FISH, SPADEA, GOLDSTEIN AND MORRISON JOIN BLAKE IN CAMPBELL'S PLAYER FIELD

NEWPORT, RI - The Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, scheduled for July 10-16 at the International Tennis Hall of Fame, will have a strong American player field as Mardy Fish, Vince Spadea, Paul Goldstein and Jeff Morrison have committed to playing the tournament. They join James Blake, who captured his second 2006 singles title in Las Vegas last weekend and is currently ranked No. 14 in the world.

The Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships, played for the Van Alen Cup, is the only ATP event held on grass in North America and is the first tournament held in the United States after the Wimbledon fortnight.

Mardy Fish of Tampa, Florida will be making his fifth appearance at the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships. He was the No. 3 seed in 2003 and was a quarterfinalist in both 2002 and 2000. Fish holds one career singles title (2003 Stockholm) and has reached six ATP finals since turning pro in 2000. He also holds three career doubles titles and captured the singles silver medal in the 2004 Athens Olympics.

Vince Spadea, who resides in Boca Raton, Florida, will be making his fifth appearance in Newport, after reaching the Campbell's tournament final in last year's quest for the Van Alen Cup. Spadea holds one career ATP singles title (2004 Scottsdale) and has reached four tournament finals. He finished the 2005 tennis season in the Top 100 for the tenth time in his career, reaching a career high of No. 19 in 2004. This year, he has already reached the semifinals at San Jose and Delray Beach and is currently at No. 82 in the INDESIT ATP rankings.

Paul Goldstein will be making his third appearance in Newport after advancing to the semifinals last year. He finished the 2005 tennis season with a career year-end best ranking of No. 68, his first Top 100 position since 2000. Goldstein's 2006 tennis season is off to a good start, as last week he advanced to the semifinals in Las Vegas and has reached a career high singles ranking of No. 63. A former Stanford University player, Goldstein helped lead his school to four straight NCAA team titles and earned All-American honors all four years.

Jeff Morrison, whose favorite surface is grass, will be making his fifth appearance in Newport. In 2004 Morrison finished in the Top 100 for the second time in three years, having a reaching a career-high No. 82. Before turning pro in 2000, Morrison captured the 1999 NCAA singles title, finishing as the No. 2 collegiate player (behind Harvard's James Blake) in the country. He returned in 2000 finishing as the country's No. 1 collegiate player, compiling a 117-22 career match record.

Tickets for the Campbell's Hall of Fame Tennis Championships are moving quickly. Re: Early Commitments

Well that was before he reached the final of Indian Wells and entered the Top 10. Now he probably thinks he'll reach the 2nd week of Wimby, and if he doesn't, he can always ask for a WC, which I'm sure the tournament would give him. If I remember correctly last year they gave one to Murray and he turned around and told the press how horrible the courts in Newport are.

Re: Early Commitments

They pay more at Indianapolis and it's on his best surface, plus he'd have more time to rest after Wimbledon, so the decision really makes sense schedule-wise. But he shouldn't have committed in the first place.

Rhode Island is the smallest state in the US (so there are no pros from there) and is right next to Blake's home state since he was about 6 - Connecticut. So I'm sure there was a bit of 'guilt-tripping' going on there somewhere.

Exactly. I think everyone understands why he'd do it, but they still feel a little jilted. I'd be shocked after this, though, if the tourney would then give him a WC....
