AdvertisementFOR the first time since 2004, Australia has three players in the top 100 of world tennis after Melbourne's Peter Luczak continued his amazing run of form by winning his fourth tournament in three months.

Playing on the ATP Challenger tour, Luczak won his second title in as many weeks, downing Italian Simone Vagnozzi 6-3,6-3 to win the $50,000 championship in the southern Polish city of Bytom.

The win lifted Australia's claycourt specialist to a world ranking of 98, joining Chris Guccione (95) and Lleyton Hewitt (19) in the top 100. Australia has not had three players in the top 100 since Mark Philippoussis dropped out in 2004.

Three months ago, Luczak's ranking had dropped to 246 after a protracted bout of pneumonia and, at 27 and with a baby, his future on the tour looked shaky. But since then, he has won four of his past seven tournaments on the Challenger tour, and making a final and semi-final in the others, giving him a record of 27 wins and three losses.

Born in Warsaw, raised in Melbourne and now based in Sweden, Luczak has got there with an itinerary that has taken him so far this year to Australia, South Africa, Germany, Ecuador, Morocco, Italy, the Czech Republic, the Canary Islands, France and Poland. Given that, it's not surprising that rather than playing Wimbledon, this week he will be in Kazakhstan, for another $50,000 event, again on clay. But he has a break coming. Next month, he will marry Katarina Queckfeldt in Sweden, before choosing between continuing on European clay or heading to the US Open.
