Re: Jarkko Nieminen and other Finnish players

Next week in Japan will be played ITF18 junior tournament Osaka Mayor's Cup (08 Oct to 14 Oct), which is Grade A tournament (the highest tournament level in juniors).

In Osaka following Finns will be in main draw
- Harri Heliövaara (ITF34; 18 years)
- Henri Laaksonen (ITF212; 15 years)
- Jesse Kiuru (ITF320; 17 years)

Harri Heliövaara was last year finalist in Osaka.

Henri Laaksonen is the brightest finnish junior tennis talent since Jarkko Nieminen. Henri has this year won already 3 ITF18 tournaments, but Osaka is too high level tournament for him I suppose. Anyway good experience to him surely.

Jesse Kiuru is also a promising player who belongs to new finnish tennis junior team.

POR F5
1R (8)Timo Nieminen d. Rui Machado (POR,812) 6-1 3-6 6-2
2R (8)Timo Nieminen - Jose-Antonio Sanchez de Luna (ESP,383)

This tournament looks too strong for Timo. There might be a chance in the next match though, as he defeated Sanchez 6-4 6-0 earlier this year.

So Juho will play in Stockholm Open!! - today with Filip Prpic (Swe)in doubles!

...but he didn,t play in singles qualifying, because he was the first one outside the draw with his ranking ATP412. The cut-off in qualifying draw was Martin Pedersen (Den; ATP400). What a pity also because the qualifying draw size was first time 16 and not 32 like before and usually.

I guess Lipsky/Martin were coming from the challengers not long ago and are not so consistent on the main tour.

I only saw Juho play once and his volley was terrible. He often hit it wide. I didn't think he had a great game for doubles. His backhand was the best shot.

Re: Jarkko Nieminen and other Finnish players

Juho has a good serve and returns for the doubles. And I guess his volleys might have improved this year under Ketola's guidance.

In the quarters Paukku/Prpic will take on this years Wimbledon champions Clement/Llodra

Not so good success to finnish juniors in Osaka.

Young talent Henri Laaksonen (15,5 years) won his first match but lost his second. Henri's junior ITF18-ranking rose to ITF201.

Harri Heliövaara was second seeded and won easily his first match, but was forced to give up the second after first set because his shoulder injury. Harri's juniorranking dropped from ITF34 to ITF79, when he lost his last year Osaka finalpoints.

Let's hope that Harri's shoulder problem is not serious. Harri is still the best hope in finnish male tennis after Jarkko Nieminen and Juho Paukku and before Henri Kontinen and Henri Laaksonen.

Jesse Kiuru lost his first single match but reached the quaterfinal in doubles with Manuell Pröll (AUT).
