Bob Bryan will miss Davis Cup
Aggravated shoulder injury sidelines doubles player

By Rhiannon Potkey
Tuesday, September 16, 2008

Bob Bryan hoped the cortisone shot he received in his left shoulder two days before the U.S. Open would last him through the Davis Cup.

But as soon as he lifted the champion's trophy in New York, the Camarillo native knew it was the last time he would be lifting anything for a while.

Bryan will not participate in this weekend's Davis Cup semifinal match between the United States and Spain — leaving the defending champion Americans without one-half of the top-ranked Bryan brothers doubles team.

While his twin brother Mike Bryan and fellow teammates Andy Roddick and Sam Querrey of Thousand Oaks departed for Madrid, Bob Bryan stayed behind to rehabilitate his injured shoulder in Florida.

"I aggravated it pretty bad at the Open and only made things worse," Bob Bryan said Monday. "I knew if I wanted a chance to play the rest of this year, I had to shut it down now. I can't even hit any balls."

U.S. Davis Cup captain Patrick McEnroe is expected to announce a replacement for Bob Bryan at a news conference today in Madrid.

A big-serving left-hander, Bob Bryan's left shoulder has been bothering him since Wimbledon.

He had an MRI exam performed, which revealed "a slight labral tear and fraying of the rotator cuff," but continued to play through the Olympics and the Open.

"I haven't had a recent MRI, but if it's not turning around in rehab, I am going to get another one pretty soon," he said.

The 30-year-old Bryans are usually a guaranteed point for the U.S. on Saturdays with a 14-2 record in Davis Cup competition (although one of those losses came last April in the quarterfinals against France). But Mike Bryan will have to spend a rare weekend playing apart from his twin.

Bob Bryan is targeting a return from his injury in four weeks, but doesn't plan to push things. He realizes he has the rest of his career to consider.

"If I take care of it and rehab and get stronger, doctors say I would be OK and get another five years out of it at least," he said.

omg poor Bob.

Sometimes our light goes out but is blown into flame by another human being.
Each of us owes deepest thanks to those who have rekindled this light

poor Bob, he must be gutted. Hopefully it'll get better soon, he seems to be dealing with it sensibly though so I don't think we need to worry too much about him coming back too soon.

I'm not sure how appropriate this title is for this weekend!

Well I'm sorry for Bob I hope he takes very good care of that shoulder. The shoulder has been the undoing of several tennis players. But the point was still won Sadly I don't think that one point is going to help much. The Spanish Team and clay go together like cake and ice cream
