Re: Bryan Twins

I finally found this thread again.

I have this great AO win all on tape.

Since September 2002:
Singles:33
Doubles:33
Mixed Doubles:7
Team:7

Ain't it grand?

Debut record: 14 out of 24
And that's bad.
Retired: Oct. 23, 2006

Re: Bryan Twins

Congrats to the guys
It's good to see them taking the title, instead of being the bridesmaid/s *mental image*. Also, Martin Damm seemed quite lovely at the end, when they were all at the net... ((But if I see any more footage of the Indo-czech chest bumps, I will SCREAM!))

No one likes those chest bumps Will someone tell them to stop next time they see them.

I was teasing As I posted in GM I could care less too. They don't really do the chest bump that often in matches anyway

Re: Bryan Twins

Bob was on the phone on this tennis radio show here at www.tennisliveonline.com

he said some interesting stuff about how Justine's retirement and that he didn't get his eating right and how it affected him physically and all that.

They asked a question from a fan in Singapore about how they celebrated. They really want to win Wimby to get the careet slam.

Talking about DC next weekend, they're already in La Jolla Etc. etc. they'll be really focused, the singles guys like having a doubles team so that they can focus on their stuff. They're all really close, hotel rooms right next to each other, dinners, DC is a great atmosphere for the whole team

They read a really long email from Luke Jensen that was really nice, aw, wow. Then asked him about this crazy shot he hit in the AO final lol.

pretty sure they'll have an archive on the site, it's about 45 min into the show for about 10-15 min. good stuff.

Re: Bryan Twins

Several days late but I'm still processing a lot of AO matches. In a word: I'm so happy that ESPN decided to show the doubles final live, it was very exciting.

Personally, I like the chest bumps. They are fun and it's turned into their signature celebration, but I don't understand why many people (esp. Europeans) seem to loath it? And did anybody else catch Paes and Damm mocking Bob & Mike by doing the chest bump as well? Heh. The boys made them pay for their insolence.

Tennis-x and Peter Bodo both reported on it; from TennisWorld:

Quote:
The Bryan twins won the doubles (in a great match, 6-4 in the third) over Martin Damm and Leander Paes. Because the truncated women’s final ended so abruptly, the doubles was played before an SRO crowed in Rod Laver Arena. The guys put on an amazing show, a highlight of which, for some, was Damm and Paes imitating the Bryans’ chest bump—a move that had the Bryans bugging out, and firing balls at their opponents’ heads.

It never really got ugly out there, but it was awfully close. It did get ugly in the presser—so much so that you ought to check out the transcripts. Oddly enough, the Damm/Paes transcript has gone missing (conspiracy theory, anyone?), and it looks like our friends at ASAP haven’t updated their archives yet. If you care, bug me in a few days' time.

If you read the Bryans transcript, though, you’ll get a sense of the bad blood that was flowing. Here’s a money quote from Leander Paes (I have a hard copy of the transcript)—and bear in mind that Paes is Indian, from a culture that puts a premium on civility:

My previous partner, Zimonjic, had a run-in with them {the Bryans} at the World Masters. He would have almost put both of them into the lockers if we hadn’t stopped it. That was one. The last Czech partner I played with, David Rikl, at the Miami championships, in the semis, a few years ago, got hit straight in the head by Mike, straight in the head, bang. It was an easy putaway. So you expect that from Mike, all the time. He’s just a little insecure little fella . . . It’s all right.
Wow. The bottom line is that the Bryans' Homo Jockus Americanus gestalt does wear a little to a lot on some of the other, mostly non-U.S. players.

But the Bryans have almost triple-handedly energized the doubles game (the third Bryan is father Wayne), just as much because of their showmanship and tireless promotional efforts as their skills. Not only that, they led the counter-attack when the ATP last June tried to destroy doubles as we know it.

In less than six months, the ATP has—there’s no other way to put it—turned tail and fled from the wrath of the Bryans. In fact, the ATP’s official position on doubles made a 180-degree turn, partly because of the ruckus (and lawsuit) kicked up by Wayne Bryan, the hardest working man in the tennis business. For that reason, I had hoped to name Wayne Bryan my Person of the Year for 2005, only I never got around to writing the post. Sorry, Wayne!
Boy, Paes sure sucked on a lemon, didn't he?

Anyway, congrats to Bob & Mike! A well-earned win. Go forth and conquer Wimbledon, get that career slam.

"What kind of shape am I in now? Well round is a shape." said Roddick with a laugh. "I had a very detailed retirement plan, and I feel like I've met every aspect of it: a lot of golf, a lot of carbs, a lot of fried food, and some booze, occasionally — I've been completely committed ... The results have shown."
