Ready for US Open

I am ready for my 13th straight US Open.
I beat Stefano Galvani in the qualification final - 6-1, 6-7, 6-0 - and played very good tennis when I really needed to. It feels that my focus on my singles game the last few weeks in USA has payed off. I have played a lot of matches, and I have been playing better and better and better. I was the only one to put real pressure on Andre Agassi, taking him to three sets, before his final in Montreal for instance, and I feel strong and inspired, both mentally and physically. Against Galvani I showed my true capacity, and that I belong here. I had a great feeling in that match.
In a tournament like the US Open, it´s tough all the way. But I think that I have a good chance against Tomas Behrend from Germany in the first round. And after that, anything is possible.
I have been i one semi final and two quarter finals here before. I love New York and the atmosphere out on the courts.
This is going to be great!

New York to the Max
I think that our son Max is becoming as hooked on New York as I am. Max´s favourite colour is yellow.
He has always liked taxi cars.
And, well, as you know, you can hardly walk ten meters in New York City without "bumping" into a big, swaying, impressive and very yellow Chevy taxi. So Max shines! He bounces up and down and constantly pulls my arm: "Look daddy, a yellow taxi, and there´s another one, and look, one more.!" Only in New York Max, only in New York!

Re: JONAS BJORKMAN

More men starting families on tour
Quote:
By Douglas Robson, special for USA TODAY
NEW YORK — It's not the typical debris usually found strewn about the player's lounge at the U.S. Open, but strollers, bottles and pacifiers are becoming a more regular part of the paraphernalia seen on tour.

Fatherhood is far from the norm in men's tennis. But it is an increasingly prevalent lifestyle decision — a product of longer careers, changing social mores and even technology, which makes staying in touch easier.

"Having a family was something I always dreamed about and looked forward to," says Andre Agassi, who held off fireball-serving Ivo Karlovic of Croatia 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (7-5), 7-6 (7-5) in the Open's second round Thursday afternoon. "I mean, that's an incredible time in your life. So to postpone that, for me, I never really considered it."

But Agassi is hardly the sole papa playing. Slightly more than 10% of the top-100 ranked men now have children, not including expectant fathers such as fourth-ranked Lleyton Hewitt of Australia or Greg Rusedski of Britain, the 1997 U.S. Open finalist.

By contrast, just one woman, 93rd-ranked Sybille Bammer of Austria, is a mother. Part of this paternal trend is a function of age. Men are playing longer and having more success at an older age, which makes it more likely they will start families before retiring.

According to the ATP, the average age of the top-100 has been inching up for the last 20 years, from 24.0 in 1985 to 25.3 today. The ATP also counts 13 players 30 or older among the top-100.

To be sure, the pro circuit is still a young man's game, with the extensive travel and the allure of wine and women potent forces conspiring against domesticity.

But many players say that having family around, and especially children, adds a calming ballast to sporting lives – and livelihoods —that often hinge on a few points here or there. It also mitigates the loneliness of traveling to far-flung places.

"It's great," says Italy's Davide Sanguinetti, a 12-year tour veteran who travels nearly all the time with his wife and 3-year-old daughter, Alice. "When I'm mad, when I lose, when I'm nervous, she makes me forget all my troubles."

Few fathers travel full-time with their kids because of the cost and complications, and for their children's well being. Babies can disrupt sleep before matches, and too many weeks on the road can take a toll on toddlers.

Technology has played a role because players can take advantage of the Internet and wireless communications to stay in touch. Cell phones, web cams and of course the Internet are essential parenting tools. The growing paternal influence has altered the dynamic in the players' lounge, with children milling about and men as likely to be playing video games as changing diapers.

Increasingly, the best men tennis players in the world – or more often, their wives and nannies – can also be seen pushing strollers, fumbling with baby bottles or passing out stuffed toys.

USA Network analyst and former pro Jim Courier says it's a healthy change from his days on tour. "I think it's good especially for the young guys on tour to see there is a little bit more to life than just living inside the lines," says the four-time Grand Slam champ.

Still, wives deserve most of the credit for making family life possible on tour, players say. "Mom's do phenomenal work," says Sweden's Jonas Bjorkman.

Some players acknowledge that a special camaraderie develops through the common experience of having kids. Sometimes that means exchanging advice.

To meet these growing needs, many larger tournaments now offer childcare services. For instance, tucked beneath Arthur Ashe Stadium near the players' locker room is a childcare center where some 10-15 kids play under the watchful eyes of adults, according to supervisor Anne McGivney.

The benefits aside, players say the hardest part is being away from children, which can create heart-wrenching moments.

Jiri Novak of the Czech Republic recently returned to his parent's home in Prostejov to find that his 7-year-old son, Jakub, had mastered an almost universal ritual of childhood passed from father to son: learning to ride a bike."It's not me teaching him, but his grandfather," says Novak, who also has 4-year-old twins. "It makes me sad."

Technology can backfire, too.
Last January, Bjorkman began using a webcam to communicate with his 2½-year-old son, Max, during a four-week swing in Australia. When Max saw his dad's face on a computer at home, however, all he could say was, "Daddy, come home."

"We stopped after that for a period. It was too brutal for him and me."
