Ferrer, Baghdatis To Clash In Quarter-finals

Former Top 10 players David Ferrer and Marcos Baghdatis will face off in the SA Tennis Open quarter-finals after both players earned straight-sets victories, Wednesday in Johannesburg. Ferrer won their only previous meeting in 2006 at the ATP World Tour Masters 1000 tennis tournament in Cincinnati.

Spanish No. 2 seed Ferrer, who dropped just two games total in his first round match Tuesday at the ATP World Tour 250 tennis tournament, continued his strong form as he defeated German Simon Greul 6-3, 6-4 in 70 minutes.

The 26-year-old Ferrer, currently ranked No. 13 in the South African Airways ATP Rankings, is making his third ATP World Tour appearance of the 2009 season. He reached the semi-finals at Auckland (l. to Querrey) and the third round at the Australian Open (l. to Cilic).

In his second straight match against a South African player, eighth seed Baghdatis saved all four break point on serve to defeat wild card Raven Klaasen 6-3, 7-5. The 23 year old hit 12 aces and won 73 per cent of his service points to reach his first ATP World Tour quarter-final since last June at Halle (l. to Federer).

The 85th-ranked Baghdatis, who played in just 12 tournaments last season due to injuries, came to Johannesburg following a fourth round showing at the Australian Open (l. to Djokovic). The Cypriot reached his first Grand Slam final in Melbourne three years ago, and later in the year reached a career-high ranking of No. 8.

Rain delayed the start of play by four hours on Wednesday.
