Current rule: No Wild Cards to defending champions. Suggestion: Defending champions should be awarded Wild Cards if they fail to make the main draw of a tournament.
This is another potential manager headache. I can see multiple occasions where someone forgets to request the WC, or the manager forgets to award it. Also is this for challengers as well? Do we award it automatically? What if you won a challenger but want to play a 250 or 500 instead? What happens to the challengers that dont exist anymore - do we award to a new challenger? Too much uncertainty
Starting out the season I'll be on the cusp of alot of Md's and an extra WC could make a difference to be in Quallies , but it's hard to win a tournament and I like the thought of the defending champion being in the draw, so I voted to give them a WC , but I doubt it would be applied that often anyways.
I agree with a1canada there. I think that it won't need to be applied very often. If the DC loses in first round anyway, they still end up with 0 points.
As there is only ever 1 DC, I think it won't make much difference to the MD's of tournaments. Whether it takes the space of a SE or not, it's not like we are giving a lot of spots away to people who are ranked 200+ like they sometimes do in the ATP!
I like the idea of the WC helping the best challenger players getting a step up into MS1000. But I really disagree with this new rule : why would we grant an out of form player a WC who just had a one-shot win one year before ?
And I don't say that because I've got no title to defend
