Russian qualifier Svetlana Kuznetsova has claimed her first title on the Women's Tennis Association (WTA) Tour, winning the inaugural Nordea Nordic Light Open in Helsinki, Finland. And she made it a victory to remember.
Kuznetsova was trounced in the first set of Sunday's final by Denisa Chladkova of the Czech Republic, 6-0. But then she rallied to win the next two sets and the match 6-3, 7-6. The 17-year-old Russian showed a great deal of spirit in her comeback victory, in an match which lasted almost two and one half hours.
Kuznetsova said she was nervous and that was why she made a lot of mistakes. Once she got focused, she displayed the kind of tennis that led her to earlier victories over third-seeded Swiss player Patty Schnyder and fifth-seeded Slovak Martina Sucha.
Kuznetsova, who makes her home in Spain, was ranked 123rd in world coming into the Finnish tournament and made her grand slam debut at January's Australian Open.
