Young French star Gael Monfils headed a list of notable first round losers as he made a shock exit when he was beaten by little-known Russian Igor Kunitsyn in four sets.
The 19-year-old arrived in London buzzing with confidence after recording his best Grand Slam performance in beating James Blake in five sets to reach the round of 16 at the French Open, but his hopes of a similar run at Wimbledon were promptly dashed by his 24-year-old opponent.
At first Monfils looked in control, putting the Russian’s serve under pressure to take the first set 7-5. However, a second set loss on a tie-break prompted a breakdown in the Frenchman’s concentration. The Russian, meanwhile, remained composed, seizing the match 5-7, 7-6 (9-7), 6-3, 6-4 and booking his place in the second round of Wimbledon for the first time.
