Challenger swing in South America?

Anyone knows if "Copa Petrobras" series is gonna take place like in 2004?

It's not in the ATP calendar, but I think last year wasn't either.

Re: Challenger swing in South America?

No, I don't think so.

Last year the events (e.g. Aracuja, Santa Cruz de la Sierra and Guadalajara) were on the Challenger Calendar, though it wasn't stated that they were part of the Copa Petrobras.

This year, these events are no longer on the Challenger Calendar, so I doubt they still exist.

Sorry, I think I mentioned Santa Cruz de la Sierra, but it wasn't a part of it.

These events were:

Guadalajara
Bogota
Aracaju
Buenos Aires
Santiago

And another one in Colombia.

Re: Challenger swing in South America?

Coo Coo I think you were right in first place, cause bogota was the colombian stage, the missing one is Santa Cruz (Bolivia) and it was indeed a part of that swing ...

but I still have no clue about this year ... it would really be a pity...

Yes, it would. But many Challengers are disappearing this year

Re: Challenger swing in South America?

Last year Petrobras made it sound like they were making a long-term commitment to Latin American Tennis, the impression I got was that they were going to replace the "Copa Ericsson" for at least a few years. There's a big need for challengers in LA, I hope something gets done in the near future.

Re: Challenger swing in South America?

If you look at the ATP calendar there are no challengers at all listed anywhere from October onwards. So I think it is just that the ATP haven't got round to finalising the dates yet rather than tournaments being cancelled. In fact so far this year we have had 65 challengers compared to 60 at this point last year.

Ah I just opened the PDF and searched for the Challengers I knew where part of the series.

I did not say that we have fewer Challengers this year, but it is true many Challengers are disappearing. On the other hand, many others are being erected.

Re: Challenger swing in South America?

Coocoo, ATP challenger calendar has added a few ones for the second half that weren't there before ... they have Bogota, and Santiago in consec weeks but I don't know if they are part of a bigger swing like last year...

Re: Challenger swing in South America?

You also have Campos Do Jordao in brazil (apparently Juan Martín will be there) so Im guessing there will be a few more challengers in South/Latin America.

Elletrista, where did you get the information about the WC for Juan in 2006?

Well Jaite (The ATP BA tourney director) hinted that it was a strong possibility, But he did not say it was a lock.
If there is a WC for young talents, it will most likely go to him.

Re: Challenger swing in South America?

found the quote about the WCs:
